About 500 years ago people from this village have went to kasi and worshipped Lord Viswanathar. They brought a Lingam in the shape of `Salagramam' to this village from Kasi. They installed the Lingam with Avudiyar and named as Sri Viswanatheeswarar and Ambal as Sri Vislashi Ambal. People from this village and surrounding villages started coming to this shrine and worshipped Lord Siva as Viswanatheeswaran and had satisfaction of worshipped lord viswanathar in Kasi. Even today it is belived in this district that visiting to kalpoondi Viswanatheeswaran temple is equal to visiting Kasi temple. Once in this village there was heavy rain and the river kamandalanatha river was running full of water and started touching the village. The theret of water made the people to pray to Lord Siva for there safty. Within shortwhile the flood started slowdown and people are saved by the Lord Viswanatheeswarar and from that this lord Siva is also called as " Vellanthangiswarar " The shrine of lord Dakshinamurthy in the south side of temple is in the form of Yoga Dakshinamurthy. Hence this temple is worshipped as Guru Parikarasthalam. The Saint Sri Sri Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Mahaswamigal has visited this village and worshipped lord Sri Visalakshi ambal and Sri Viswanatheeswarar during his visits to Arni town.
