Guest guest
Hello all!! I'm new to the group. My name is Jessica, I'm 31, married with 4 kids and currently a stay at home mom and student. I'm new to Hinduism - very new you might say. I recently read " The Idiots Guide to Hinduism " and got a rough over view of it. I'm currently reading " The Upanishads " (when I have a break from school work, that is) and I have a copy of the Bhagavad-Gita. I don't know much, but I'm trying to learn more. One site I visit a lot is sanatansociety.org. I'm more drawn to the Mother Goddess and would truly like to expand my knowledge and faith. I have lots and lots of questions about the customs and holidays and how to be a " good " Hindu. Also, if there is anyone here who happens to be in the Wichita, Kansas area, I would love to get together. Thanks for accepting me, Peace, Blessings, and Harmony, ~~Jessica

Guest guest
Hello, Jessica Upanishads and Gita are not the best places to start, to be a Hindu. It has its place, but not in the beginning. Leaving aside all the intellectual debate about religions, to be a Hindu is to live the life of a Hindu. Many people live as Hindus but live in doubt about the tenets of Hinduism. I think you would benefit by reading some literature of Hinduism Today. http://www.hinduismtoday.com/ Please read and understand Beliefs of Hinduism listed at http://www.himalayanacademy.com/basics/nineb/ Path on Success starts when one assimilates these completely. Most people just live an ad-hoc life without understanding the significance of these basics. Read Ramayana, Maha Bharata. Worshiping the Creator God as Mother Goddess is just one tradition. At least in the beginning philosophical speculation can be a distraction to progress. Love for God is essential. I would strongly recommend you to read and re-read Devi Bhagavatam http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/db/index.htm It is worth buying the printed book. Associate yourself with local temple visits and festivals and community functions. Take darshan of pandits, gurus and svamis from tradition. Hold off your opinions, and do not be discouraged by others opinions, welcome all the apparent contradictions, do not get bought into some sectarian outlook until you investigate for several years. All this will result into a beautiful life as you align your life, living in confirmity with these ideas and ideals.
