Guest guest
I apologise about the wording of the question...Some hindu scriptures claim the that maintaining celibacy helps maintain the purity, concentration and focus of the mind. but there are examples in mythology where " grihathashramis " maintain the same level of purity...(example Anasuya who could change the Trimoorthies into infants by mere sprinkling of water). Does this have a point? --- On Tue, 4/7/09, NMadasamy <nora wrote: NMadasamy <nora Re: Celibacy Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 1:31 AM , Robert Partick <robertpartick@ ...> wrote: > > Greetings Brothers and Sisters, > Could someone tell me the importance of celibacy? Guest guest
Nothing to apologise about. Yes I guess its true some hindu scriptures advocates celibacy........and some hindu religious organisation too do the same...but most often what they preach they do not adhere to it. The " swamis " and " swamini " in public screaming celibacy but behind close doors practising otherwise. , Robert Partick <robertpartick wrote: > > I apologise about the wording of the question...Some hindu scriptures claim the that maintaining celibacy helps maintain the purity, concentration and focus of the mind. but there are examples in mythology where " grihathashramis " maintain the same level of purity...(example Anasuya who could change the Trimoorthies into infants by mere sprinkling of water). Guest guest
Celibacy also has a wide variety of interpretation - the oldest upanisads describe sexual activity as the yajna (I believe that's in the Chandogya), and describe sex within marriage limited to particular times of day as a kind of celibate state. Sex as a normal part of life can be a vice or a virtue - it can separate one from divinity or bring one closer. I think this is the point of certain tantric philosophies as a whole, that life can be a vice or a virtue, but it's up to you to find your way through from one side to the other. Sex as a vice doesn't necessarily mean someone who is addicted to sex - it can mean someone who uses celibacy as an egoic attachment in and of itself. For some, celibacy will help them find spiritual clarity - for others, it will be a distraction. But where the values around celibacy came from and how they work in the context of hinduism - that's a vast topic! Guest guest
Extremely well said. I add here again that there is no place for celibacy in Srividya or Tantra. If there is any mention that is a later interpolation. The Chandogya vaakya is very relevant as also certain mantras in lalitopakhyana. The reference to celibecay is unnatural. sex is a normal activity (not when you are in the state St. Peter referred to*smile*) and necessary for the sustanance of humanity. What will happen if all the populace turned celibate? What is required is reining in uncontrollable sexual urge. In fact Tantra does not even limit it to wife. But there are restrictions so that the social fabric is not rent asunder. --- On Tue, 4/7/09, Sundari Johansen Hurwitt <sundarikali wrote: Sundari Johansen Hurwitt <sundarikali Re: Re: Celibacy Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 12:18 PM Celibacy also has a wide variety of interpretation - the oldest upanisads describe sexual activity as the yajna (I believe that's in the Chandogya), and describe sex within marriage limited to particular times of day as a kind of celibate state.
