Guest guest
Both coal and diamonds are carbon, just arranged differently. And carbon undergoes phase changes. But don't anyone get your hopes up that one can just pick up a bag of coal and make oneself rich by turning it into a sack of diamonds. Yes, coal *is* transformed into diamonds, under certain circumstances. But it takes extreme temperatures and pressure, over millions of years of time. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/how-does-coal-become-a-diamond.html But, consider this -- " Interestingly, diamonds are not permanently stable at the temperatures and pressures we experience at the surface of the earth. Diamonds are very slowly changed into graphite. " (http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/env99/env186.htm ) So your precious diamonds are in fact reverting to being graphite (a pure form of coal) even as we speak. But again, its probably early to panic. You probably aren't about to wake up one morning and discover that your grandmother's diamond ring is now a lump of coal. Its no doubt a very slow process as well. But it does tend to discredit the notion that " diamonds are forever.
