Guest guest
This article by the prolific scholar alexis sanderson is one of the writings I have emmensely enjoyed reading (over the last weeks). I liked all his articles and what is surprizing is his understanding and compassion as opposed to pure western scholarship. http://alexissanderson.com/Documents/sanderson_1985.pdf This article is insightful and much more valid than my ignorant posts w.r.t the recent discussions on brahminism and tantrism. What I feel good about is with his views with extensive schorship and evidence is very much what I had imagined to be true. Another more relevant article is about a missing link between vedic and tantric religions. http://alexissanderson.com/Documents/Laakulas.pdf Love Cricket? Guest guest
Sanderson is a great source and an eminently reputable scholar in the field of Kashmiri Saivism at Oxford. However, it should be noted that his focus is on Saivism, not Saktism, and so readers should not consider his work on Saivism to be always true of other schools of thought, or every region. For instance, Biernacki notes in Renowned Goddess of Desire that Sanderson writes about the reasons for transgressive practices (to upset caste structures), but that these practices were largely not transgressive in Assam, and that transgression took on a different form. For instance, Assamese Brahmins were never vegetarians, historically speaking, and even now are not, generally speaking (at least this is true at Kamakhya, where meat is a regular part of almost everyone's diet, with the exception of beef and chicken).
