Guest guest
I got a nice e-mail this morning from the CRY organization in India (it's a legitimate and praiseworthy social charity with legal non-profit status in the US, UK and several other Western nations) talking about a special day that I was not aware of -- Day of the Girl Child. I thought at least some members at SS might be interested in knowing more. Here's a summary and link: THE GIRL CHILD IN INDIA She has only half as good a chance as her brothers at good healthcare, at enrolling in school, at not dropping out by Class 5. She is as interested in sports as the boys, she likes her dolls but is not beholden to become a mother and wife. In fact she wants to spend her childhood like any other child – well-cared for, fed, educated, protected, and heard. She will figure out who or what she wants to be and does not need to be pushed into marriage or any role society sees fit for her. She will choose for herself, all she needs is an enabling environment. On the occasion of Girl Child day, let us enable all girls to find their voice, break down barriers, to confront all challenges, and to be all that they can be.
