UGANDA

Security forces in Uganda are hunting for 16 schoolgirls who have

been abducted by the notoriously brutal rebel group the Lord's

Resistance Army.

If they are not found quickly, the girls' fate will likely be that

of thousands of others who have been kidnapped over the past 17

years of fighting between rebels and the government.

They will become sex slaves for militia commanders.

The LRA, which has earned a terrifying reputation for its brutality

against the people of northern Uganda, has abducted an estimated

20,000 children over the years.

According to New York-based Human Rights Watch some 5,000 of them

have been abducted since June 2002. It blamed the number on the

return of LRA rebels to Uganda after the government intensified a

military offensive against their bases in neighbouring Sudan last

year.

Majar al-Kabir, IRAQ

Six UK soldiers killed in Iraq were shot by civilians after weapons

searches in homes turned into a bloody showdown, according to

residents.

And Prime Minister Tony Blair told the Commons tension between

British troops and Iraqis reluctant to disarm could have led to the

killings.

The soldiers' deaths could lead to the deployment of thousands of

extra troops to Iraq as an urgent review of troop numbers, tactics

and equipment gets under way.

Hatat Mountains, YEMEN

Yemeni troops have launched an offensive against Islamic militants,

killing at least 10 during an attack on their hideout, military

sources said.

The militants, who were believed to be hiding the Hatat mountain in

the south of the country, have been blamed by authorities for an

attack on an army medical team that left seven people wounded in

Abyan province on Saturday.

BRAZIL

New satellite information from Brazil has revealed a sharp increase

in the rate of destruction of the Amazonian rainforest.

The information shows the speed of deforestation increased by 40%

between 2001 and 2002 to reach its highest rate since 1995.

Figures from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) show

more than 25,000 square kilometres of forest were cleared in a year -

mainly for farming.

Kashmir, INDIA

At least six Indian soldiers and two militants have died during a

gun battle at a military base in Indian-administered Kashmir, police

say.

The battle erupted when suspected Muslim separatist rebels attacked

the camp at Sunjwan, about 10 kilometres (6 miles) south of Jammu,

the winter capital.

Texas, USA

A Texan woman who hit a pedestrian and left him to die stuck in the

windscreen of her car has been jailed for 50 years.

A jury at Fort Worth sentenced 27-year-old Chante Jawan Mallard to

50 years in prison for killing a homeless man, Gregory Biggs, as

well as to 10 years for tampering with evidence.

Both sentences are to run concurrently.

It took the jury less than an hour to convict Ms Mallard, after

hearing how she drove nearly two miles (3.2 kilometres) home with Mr

Biggs wedged inside her car, then left him to bleed to death in her

garage.
