Brazil occult sex killer jailed

 

A Brazilian doctor has been sentenced to 77 years in prison for his

part in the murder and sexual mutilation of boys in the Amazon town

of Altamira between 1989 and 1993.

 

He is the third person to be sentenced. Two more members of the

occult sect to which they are said to belong will go on trial later

this month.

 

A government prosecutor said investigations into the disappearance

of another six boys, who were abducted at the same time but never

found, will begin.

 

The families of the victims cheered and cried when the judge

sentenced Dr Anisio Ferreira de Souza for the murder and mutilation

of three boys and the attempted murder of two others.

 

During the trial in the northern Brazilian city of Belem, the jury

heard that the mutilations, when the boys' genitals were removed,

had been carried out with medical expertise.

 

The victims had been anaesthetized - not from concern for their

suffering, but so their screams would not be heard.

Organ traffickers 'threaten' nuns

 

Four Catholic nuns say they have received death threats after

exposing an organ trafficking network allegedly operating in

northern Mozambique.

 

The traffickers are said to target the sex organs of children, which

are sold to make magic charms.

 

The nuns from the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate order say they

have gathered evidence of the trade.

 

They say they have spoken to victims who managed to escape and

photos of dead children with missing organs.

 

Ritual murders have been reported in many African countries, as some

witchdoctors say using human organs in magic charms makes them more

powerful.

 

These are believed by some to bring financial or sexual success to

those who use them.

Tanzania fights human skinning

 

Human skin is used for witchcraft at a price of up to $9,600

Exhibits of skin are part of Tanzania's campaign to discourage the

trade in human skin at an international business fair in the

capital.

 

Vistors to the the week-long fair in Dar es Salaam will see a rather

gruesome exhibit of human body parts in an effort to raise awareness

about the underground trade in human skin which has hit southern

Tanzania over the past two years.

 

The head of the forensic science division in the chief chemist's

office, which is exhibiting the parts, Gloria Machube, told the

BBC's Focus on Africa programme that the human skin is used in

witchcraft.

 

According to police the skins are in huge demand outside Tanzania.

 

They are transported to Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa and

the Democratic Republic of Congo before reaching their final

destination in West Africa.
