Million march against terrorism

 

Madrid - and many other cities - came to a standstill for the silence

Up to a million people are taking part in Madrid for a demonstration

against terror, a day after at least 198 died in bomb attacks in the

Spanish capital.

 

At 1200 on Friday, cities across Spain fell silent, as millions paid

their respects for victims of the bombings.

Arab militia raid camps in Chad

 

The war in Sudan has created a huge refugee problem

Sudanese militias are carrying out daily raids on refugee camps in

Chad, says the United Nations refugee agency. The UNHCR says its

relocating the refugees deeper into Chad to avoid the attacks.

 

About 600,000 people have fled their homes in Darfur western Sudan

following a year-long fight between rebels and government forces.

California suspends gay marriages

 

San Francisco has a long-established and highly vocal gay community

California's Supreme Court has ordered San Francisco officials to

immediately suspend same-sex marriages.

 

The move was made pending a legal review on the issue later this year

and comes amid conservative outrage and calls for a constitutional

ban.

 

More than 3,000 ceremonies for gay and lesbian couples have been

performed in San Francisco since the city began issuing marriage

licences last month. The court has yet to rule on the legality of

these existing marriages.
