" Buddha (= the Enlightened One) was a collective name given to

the manifested forms of the divinity descended upon the earth as

saviours. They periodically incarnated whenever Dhama was in peril.

Prince Gautama was only one of these Buddhas. Gautama himself

described the situation like this: " The Blessed One spoke and

said: 'Know Vasettha, that from time to time a Tathagatta is born

into the world, a fully enlightened one, blessed and worthy,

abounding in wisdom and goodness, happy with the knowledge of the

worlds, unsurpassed as a guide to erring mortals, a teacher of Gods

and men, a Blessed Buddha. He proclaims the Truth both in its letter

and spirit, lovely in its origin, lovely in its progress, lovely in

its consummation. A higher life doth he make known to all its purity

and all its perfectedness. " (Teviyja Sutta)
