The Court of Appeals ordered the standoff to continue between incumbent Republican Nicholas Spano and Democrat Andrea Stewart- Cousins as the votes are counted. The court overruled the midlevel Appellate Division that said just 45 disputed votes needed to be counted. That would have given Spano the win. Most of the handwritten votes that have been counted so far have gone to Stewart-Cousins. The court stated that many of the problems with the ballots were due to errors of election officials. Nearly 127,000 votes were cast in the district. (Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. .)
