Tirumular on the Dance-39The Truly Religious and True ReligionThe word ‘religion’ has many senses and that which emerges in the context of the Fundamental Ontology of Saivism is : The movement of the soul towards BEING and becoming one-with BEING by becoming egoless and hence Pure and Clean. Any metaphysics that does not to the Fundamental Ontology of Pati Pacu and Paacam, cannot attain this meaning and which can be singled as the most authentic in view of it being the TRUTH. The most ubiquitous feature of whatever form of human behavior called religious involves the element of WORSHIP and which implies the substantiality of the soul as that which worships and BEING as He who is worshipped and the presence of polluting Malam as the reason because of which worship exists as a form of human behavior. Man worships the deities in order to become FREE of the MALAM that breeds the Darkness of Ignorance and which can be dispelled

only by the metaphysical illuminations the worship of deities afford.This is the substance of this enormously interesting verse of Tirumular below, certainly the greatest Tantric philosopher the world has ever known. What is interesting is that he brings into this explanation of religious life the very ancient dance music and songs and which while being common to all, was particularly important in the NKSD cultures as they even now in the Tantric Temple CultureHere we must note that the truly religious are understood as those who are not only FREE of Malam but also ones who have attained oneness with BEING so this Malam does not assail them again. It is like moving out from Dark Cave and being in the open Bright Light always (as was noted by Plato)( Tiirntu aRRaaree)But how is accomplished by the soul? To put it briefly by a way of life that is truly religious. And what is it?

One must witness the Dancing Feet of BEING and which is actually the various PLAYS of BEING with the Siva Tatvas Natam and Bindu the Tatvas that underlies the primordial biological differentiation of all creatures into males and females and which also extends to the mental and hence the cognitive processes. And in this DANCE there is MUSIC , the sounds of the anklets and which generates the various songs and dances that are practiced by all as various kinds of rituals. While the music dance and plays are numerous, but the MEANING of all is that of OPENING UP the eyes so that VISIONS normally beyond the individuals become something they enjoy. These religious arts through the special kind of aesthetics they possess , subdue the egoistic mind and by transporting the soul, perhaps against its will, into the higher metaphysical realms that PURIFIES it by the deeper metaphysical visions that become available.Now in this context there emerges the various

guru-s individuals gifted in some ways but who may appropriate the role of religious head to themselves making people depend solely on them for spiritual progress. We meet with such Messiahs and Jagadguru-s and so forth all over the world and who create more problems in human life. Now against such individuals, BEING emerges as the Guruparan, the Transcendental Guru, the Guru of all guru-s.But where to acquire such a wisdom? In scriptures? The words of such guru-s?No says Tirumular and to his eternal glory. All these ignorance destroying visions are there already in the inside of all . It is there as part of the soul and as the UNCONSCIOUS and what one has to do is withdraw from excessive commerce with the physical world pushed by all kinds worldly desires and go deeper and deeper into one’s own soul . Anyone can discover and enjoy all these visions, no matter what is the birth and such other accidents of being present in the

wolrd.We should not fail to note here that the Vedantic and other metaphysical systems in India and elsewhere which do not have an understanding of Fundamental Ontology of the Tamil religious genius , cannot give an explanation such as this, The currently dominant Vedanta with its “Only Brahman is Real” kind of Fundamental Ontology can never come up with such an explanation of the truly religious and true religion and because of which the 19th cent Somasudnara Naickar, called Vedanta as atheistic,39(2760)aadiya kaalum atiR cilampposaiyum paadiya paaddum palvaana naddamumkuudiya koolaG kuruparan koNdaadatteedi uLee kaNdu tiirntu aRRaareeMeaning:The truly religious individuals are those who have destroyed the Darkness of Ignorance and have attained a realm

of spiritual presence where they are forever free from such pollutants. This is accomplished by the true religious life where they witness the Dancing Feet of BEING ( where He moves the Natam and Bindu) and who sing and dance in accordance with the music of the anklets of the Dancing Feet. There must also be the witnessing of the various GAMES that BEING plays assuming various kinds of guises for this purpose. Then one should cease seeking to be the Guru for all and understand that it is BEING who is the real Guru, the Guru of all these and become genuinely humble. Now all these insights will become available for anyone who ventures into exploring the depths of their own soul. It is all there as pre-existent elements.
