Guest guest
The Shakti Peethas of Udupi Udupi is popularly known as Temple Town. Having the oldest Anantheshwara Temple in its heart, Udupi is surrounded by eight Temples in eight directions, making a perfect Satellite Temple System. In four directions- earth, south, west and north- it has a Temple each belonging to Durga in Indrani, Bailur, Kannarpady and Kadiyali-respectively. All these four Temples have the deity of the wives of Lord Shiva. In southeast, southwest, northwest and northeast directions, again it houses four Temples - that of Shiva's son- Skanda. They are situated at Mucchirukolu, Mangodu, Arithodu and Thangodu. In the outer circle, again we find Alevur, Udyavara, Puttur and Herga Temple - all belonging to Goddess Durga. Besides, it has Sharada Temple at Kunjibettu and Chitpady, Mahakali-Janardana Temple in Ambalapady and Durga Temple on Kunjaru Hills. So, in all Udupi has 12 Shakthi Temples. Though, Udupi is predominated by Vaishnava style of worship, it also gave due importance to the devotion of Goddess Shakthi. Indrani Panchadurga Indrani Temple is situated about 2 km east from Udupi and it is in the West of Vedachala (Manipal). The Temple, belonging to eleventh century, was last renovated in 1993 as per the plans of Raval Padmanabha Shastri, former priest of Sri Pashupathi Temple, Nepal. The whole sanctum sanctorum had been rebuilt in stones. The Goddess Durga is exhibited herself here in the form of five laterite Lingas (Panchadurga). At its back portion, an idol of Vanadurga is found. It has been replaced be a stone sculpture as the earlier wood sculpture (Daru Shilpa) was deteriorated due to exposure to sum, rain and other natural factors.
