Guest guest
Deepavali: The festival of light, the light in all of us Compiled from various sites and groups " Now the light which shines above this heaven , above all, above every thing , in the highest worlds beyond which there are no higherworlds ;verily ,this is the same as the light , which is here within the person " Chandayoga Upanishad " As rivers flow into the sea and in so doing lose name and form, so even the wise man, freed from name and form, attains the Supreme Being, the Self-luminous, the Infinite. He who knows Brahman becomes Brahman. " Mundaka Upanishad ( 3.2/8-9) God has neither birth nor death. He is eternal; he has no beginning, no end. He is in the form of Atma. That is Jnana Jyothi (light of wisdom).(Telugu poem) Fill the Heart with the oil of Love. Place in it the wick of a single pointed mind. Light it with the Knowledge of Truth and remove the darkness of Ignorance around you. Just as one lamp can light many lamps; let each youth kindle this Light in many hearts. (Swami Swaroopananda) That which is the Light of all lights, is said to be beyond darkness. It is that which is to be known - the goal of Knowledge. It is right here in the hearts of all. ( Bhagwad Gita Ch.13/Sh.17) " The Lamps are different But the *Light* is the same It comes from beyond - Fix your gaze upon the light And you are delivered from fault Inherent in the finite body " . Sufi poem (Masnavi III, 1259) All other lights borrow from the Light of the Self. (Kathopanishad 2:2:15) From a Vedanta perspective, the Light is the Self, the Atman, the Truth of our existence. The Geeta (13:17) declares, " The Light of all lights resides in everybody's heart. " The Light of the Self illumines everything in our life's experiences, as the sun illumines the entire earth. " You are the Supreme Light " – Adi Shankaracharya in Ekashloki. " Deepavali is a day dedicated to inner purity and noble character. Cultivation of character is the premise for the national resurgence. Political awakening, economic growth, social reforms and educational programs are all wonderful. But let us remember that all these depend upon the character of the people. Here is a happy day dedicated to the opening-up of our individual hearts. Let all meet their friends and neighbors at the same table and partake of bread. Let all misgivings be forgotten, all grievances forgotten. Let us remind ourselves, at least on this day, that we can be victorious over our impulses and come to illumine for the world around the Lamp of Spiritual Light.
