Deepavali Delights by: Shyam Phatak Deepavali is here, Deepavali is here That grand festival of Lights That ends evil after a protracted fight When good with all its might Leads us from darkness to Light. Deepavali is here, Deepavali is here That great festival of sound When crackers and laughter abound When crackers and sparklers light up the sky When delighted children jump with joy. Deepavali is here, Deepavali is here That gorgeous festival of snacks and sweets Where everyone enjoys a royal feast When old and young with delight meet With love and affection all hearts beat. Diwali is here, Diwali is here That gracious festival which celebrates victory The ancient festival of myth and mystery That is mentioned in both mythology and history The festival that signals Triumph over Tragedy. Deepavali or Diwali is known as the festival of lights. The lights or lamps signify the uplifting of the darkness, and victory of good over the evil within. This is a major festival significant in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism and its celebrated across the globe. This day is also known as when King Ram of Aydodhya returned after a 14 years exile in the forest. The people of Aydodhya welcomed him back by lighting up rows of lamps. The five days of Diwali are: 1) Dhanteras marks the first day of the five day long Diwali. It is an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar, marked to bring eternal good forturne. This day falls on the 13th day of the second half of the lunar moth. It is an auspicious day for shopping of utensils and gold. This day is also regarded as the Jayanti of God Dhanvantri who came out during the churning of the great ocean by the gods and the demon. Dhanteras is celebrated with " Lakshmi-Puja " which is preformed in the evening by yourself or some people call their priest to preform the pooja. 2) Narak Chaturdasi is the day before diwali known as choti diwali. It is Diwali on a smaller scale, with fewer lights lit and fewer crackers burst. The morning after Choti Diwali, the women of the house make beautiful, colored rangoli in the doorway and courtyard. Tiny footprints made out of rice paste are a special feature of the rangolis made for Diwali. In Hindu homes, Chhoti Diwali celebrations involve a ritual puja to Goddess Lakshmi and also to Rama in the evening. Songs in honor of the god are sung and aarti is performed. 3) Lakshmi Pooja is the third day of Diwali, which marks the most important day of the Diwali celebrations. This is the day when Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and Lord Ganesha the God of auspiciousn are worshipped acrossed the Hindu homes. After pooja its followed, members lights the lamps across the streets and home, to welcome prosperity and well being in. 4) Govardhan Puja is the fourth day of Diwali : Also called Annakut, is celebrated as the day Krishna defeated Indra. For Annakut a mountain of food is decorated symbolizing Govardhan mountain lifted by Lord Krishna. In Maharashtra it is celebrated as Padva or Bali Pratipada. The day commemorates King Bali. Men present gifts to their wives on this day. 5) Bhaiduji is the last day of Diwali. On this day brothe and sisters meet to express their love and affection for each other. Bhaiduji brings together married sisters and brothers and is significant festive day for them. This is ancient festival before Raksha Bandhan. Wishing everyone Shubh Diwali " Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well " - Mahatma Gandhi --- Dileep Balan <dileep_bal wrote: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Wish U your Family A Very Happy Diwali. > > > Have a great, fun-filled and a cheerful day!!!! > > > LIVE LIKE A CANDLE, WHICH BURNS ITSELF BUT > GIVES LIGHT, 2 OTHERS. > > > > > > LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO LIVE.
