Hello Everyone..

MURUGA SARANAM

I shall grateful if anyone can list out the rules for

Shashti Viratham. Some people advised me against

fasting if I am not fasting according to the rules,

esp. for shashti. Some one said that I have to do that

continuously for three years (or six years) and the

completion of the fast or the last shashti of the

third (or sixth) year should be done at Thiruchendur.

I could be wrong, but I felt that after I stopped

fasting for shashti my problems came down. Now I fast

only for Krithigai. I shall be grateful for those who

can correct me on this.

hi meyappan,

i used to follow shasti vratham in the following manner as advised by my friend/astrologer:

starting from the first until the 6th day, i used to take food without salt. morning it would be fruits and night it will be chappathi or rice. but whatever food it take it should be free from salt. i used to do pooja for Lord Murugan everyday. the vratham ends with a visit to the temple on skanda shasti day. regular food may be resumed from 7th day onwards.

strictly speaking, followers of skanda shasti vratham do not take any form of food at all. but office goers may follow the above guidelines so that their daily routine work is not affected. this vratham has wonderful effects.

Dear Mr. Hariharan..

Thank you very much for the details. Currently I am observing

Krithigai Vratham (as advised by friends) by abstaining from food

water and sleep from dawn to dusk. Does this also add to the Shashti

Vratham. Eating fruits in the morning means I understand that the

rule of dawn-dusk does not apply.

Another doubt is, if strict followers do not take any form of food at

all, is it that they abstain from food only between dawn and dusk?

Frankly speaking, so far, by His Grace, I have not found it difficult

with abstaining from food, but I find it very difficult with sleep.

Thank you again for clearing my doubts.
