Guest guest
Hi, I am a new member of this group. I am very much eager to know about the prana mantra (meaning of OM) which is recited by Lord Muruga to Lord Shiva at Swami Malai. Could anyone of you enlighten me on the meaning of it?. Do we have an article about the same in our website www.murugan.org? Expecting a positive reply. Thanks & Regards, Jeyaraman. T.
Guest guest
Dear Jeyaraman, I am certain that there are people in this group who can explain the meaning of Pranava Mantra much better than I can. In fact, I should not say that I know the meaning of Pranava Mantra. I have read the meaning in Skanda Purana. I do not fully understand it. In an attempt to answer your question I am going to be adventerous and translate to English what I have read in a Malayalam version of Skanada Purana. So here you go ... Pra = Special Nava = New That which, when we experience through thoughts kindles newer and newer special meanings is Pranava. That which never erodes away because of the flow of time but always stays new and fresh is the spiritual principle called Pranava. Those who know the meaning of Pranava Mantra please jump in and correct if I made any errors. Thanks. Om Guhaya Namaha! Guest guest
Group member Santosh Nair's explanation makes sense. The literal meaning is quite correct. Let me share my story of what I understood of the pranava manthram. God manifests in all life forms. The trees, animals, humans, life forms higher than even humans - the Athman resides in these forms and operates thru' them (Purusha is Athman and Prakriti is Matter). The Narayaneeyam (which is the Bhagavatha condensed) mentions that God is the highest life form in every species. Eg. among birds, He is the eagle, among serpents he is Adisesha, among rivers he is Ganga etc. The Pranava Manthra (OM) is the original Sabda (Sound) in creation. In the material world, we're made up of the Pancha bhootaas (5 elements) viz. Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Sky (Space). The Pranava Manthra can be taken to mean God (or Athman or Brahman) manifested as sound. Which is why is uttered as the first word in any Sloka to any deity. This is the knowledge I have gained thru' multiple sources - reading, listening to learned persons, flashes of insight at unpredictable time and place and so on. I hope this contribution helps.
