Guest guest
A verse, taht I wrote.. My friend AruNagiri O' charming, celestial evergreen bird! Of your glory and wisdom have I heard! How comfortably atop her hand you perch, As aeons for you did I singularly search! Poetic parrot! My wrongs you will ferret! Inspiring devotion with emotion and grit! Bestow your grace ye gentle spirit! Or don't I merit to be a favourite? Innocent, honest, my feelings a rife… I am gypsy too.. from an earlier life! So my request please… wont you abide? To sit on her hand with you by my side? Eloquently then, you can whisper with elan, Can we devise such an immortal plan? Will you imprint the verses on my tongue? So that his glory by my tribe be sung? Did the kiss of Muruga indeed bless.. That form and image you do possess? " Sukam " , " Thatthai " .. O' its all the same, " sOgham, advaitic mantra " -your middle name! Come, come, communicate the message intense Of compassion, friendship and hope immense! With you beside, why should I worry? For are you not my friend AruNagiri? OR With you beside, my problems will flee, For are you not my friend AruNakiLi?
Guest guest
Hi Raji A delightful poem. I enjoyed reading it. As the author you're the best person to explain. I understand that in Tamil expression, beauty is likened to a parrot. So I assume that you're alluding to Murugan (whose name also means " Beauty " ). But why parrot? In my understanding, when the comparison of parrot is made to a person, the person is usually female. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I like the poem, and I wish for some clarification. Keep it up Patricia --- Raji Iyer <kavayyaar wrote: > > A verse, taht I wrote.. > > My friend AruNagiri > > O' charming, celestial evergreen bird! > Of your glory and wisdom have I heard! > > How comfortably atop her hand you perch, > As aeons for you did I singularly search! > > Poetic parrot! Guest guest
Patricia: Thanks. Yes, Murugan does mean Beauty.. Now about the parrot reference..as the story goes..(I am sure you know this one!)? :-)) Remember there was this this king, PrabuDeva(?) who had become blind... He was advised by his minister Sambandhaandaan, that his blindness can only be cured by the 'PaariJaatha' flower' from Paradise - dEva lOkam. He also told the king that only Arunagiri was capable of doing it. I So the King asked Arunagiri to bring the Devaloka PaarijAtha flower. Arunagiri felt that he could not go the Deva Lokam with his existing body. So he decided to take the form a parrot and fly to Paradise. He went up the gopuram of ArunachalEsvarar Temple and found the body of a dead parrot. He performed what is known as the 'Kuudu vittu kuudu paaydhal' - 'para kaaya pravEsam'- siddhi (dont ask me the details on this one, I dont know) and left his own body and entered the body of the parrot. Having done this he went to paradise. Meanwhile, Sambandhaandaan and his disciples searched for and found the body of Arunagiri. They brought it down, dug a pit, threw it in with some rocks, mutilated the body, and finally buried it. Arunagiri obtained the DevalOka PaarijAtha in Paradise flower and on flying back and finding that his body was no more functional, perched on the gopuram of ArunachalEsvarar Temple and waited. Meanwhile the presence of the PaarijAtha flower had already cured the king of his blindness. The king and others searched for AruNagiri. AruNagiri gave the king, the Paarijaatha flower and told them that he could not rerenter his own body. Hence he was going back to Murugan. Then he flew upwards and finally reached the hand of Murugan and perched on it. The gypsy girl in the poem refers to " VaLLi " ofcourse- the wife of Murugan. Some smattering of imagination here and there from a poet's perpective thrown in for effect. :-)) Inspiration for this one came actually form a Tamil kavithai written by another Tpugazh anbar residing here in Toronto. Guest guest
Dear Raji, Thanks for your explanations. It was very beautiful. It was very informative because I consider myself not too up to the mark in my awareness of legends and scriptures related to Murugan. But, on the other hand, there's so much and so much more about Murugan and I wonder how much one person can know. So this forum is very valuable for me. I'm surprised and also delighted to learn that there are such devout Murugan followers in faraway Canada. He is indeed great!!
