Hi Karthic,

I am NOT an expert in this area. I myself am trying to improve my

concentration.

I will share with you a few techniques that I have learned:

* Japa/Mantra. Ideally you should get a mantra from a Guru. Until you

meet a Guru, choose a mantra yourself. For example your mantra could

be " Om Guhaya Namaha " or " Om Shanmughaya Namaha " or something else.

Now try to chant this mantra all the time. Deep within you there is a

place where it is still, calm and peaceful. The more times you visit

this place the sharper your concentration gets. Use the mantra as a

vehicle to take you to that still, calm and peaceful place within you

often.

* Meditation. Doing meditation every day will improve your

concentration. As you may very well know you need not wear ochre

robes and be in the Himalayas to do meditation. Those won't hurt but

are not necessary :-) Here are a couple of simple meditation

techniques:

+ Sit idle. A quiet place is better (at least initially) but not

essential. Breathe normally. Put your attention on your breath. As

you inhale feel the air moving through your nostrils into your lungs.

Feel it. Do the same as you exhale.

+ Sit idle. Listen to the sounds around you. This technique is

called Layered Listening. First hear the loudest, most obvious sound.

It could be the sound of vehicles on a nearby street. Or the sound

from a radio in a nearby room. Spend a few moments hearing that

sound. Then slowly move your attention to a less loud sound. Say the

sound of birds chirping or wind blowing. After a few moments slowly

put your attention on an even less loud sound such as the sound of

your breathing or the humming of your heart.

* Read the book " The Power of Now " by Eckhart Tolle.

Hope this helps.

May Lord Muruga bless you with improved concentraion and outstanding

results in the exams.

Om Skandaya Namaha.

Hi Karthik,

Here's my bit of advice to get better grades in your

exams. Its less spiritual and more earthy.

Its very hard to concentrate on studies at your age

when there are so many interesting distractions.

Also, very few are fortunate to have teachers who can

make the subject interesting. Finally, the textbooks

are so unimaginative, so boring!! Its really hard to

study with this package.

Hey, I said " hard " , NOT impossible. Here's a very

simple technique.

First, be kind to yourself. Tell yourself that its

not your fault. For all the reasons I have given

above, you should be guiltfree.

Next, imagine, really imagine that your exams are

over!! You have lost your chance to study better!

Wish, wish that you could turn the clock back so that

you get one more chance to seriously study.

Now that has happenen - the clock has turned back, and

you've got your chance again to study well.

The final step: make a resolution that you're not

going to regret your performance. So work on that

target of " I'm not going to regret my performance in

the exam " . So - come what may - I'm going to focus

all I can on my work.

It often works for me when I have to read up and make

a presentation on a subject I dont really enjoy. But

when I resolve that I-refuse-to-regret-my-performance

after the presentation, it helps me to focus on the

subject matter, no matter how hard or how boring it

is.

REMINDER

Your opportunity to educate yourself is God's

blessing. Show your appreciation by applying your

mind to your work. I mean, work is not just something

you do with your hands and legs. Your brain is also

involved.

Good luck.
