Once Indiran had war with an Asura called Valaasuran. To defeat him Indiran asked the help of a king called Musukundan and with his help Indira defeated Valaasuran. So Indira bought Musukundan to Indira Lokam to treat him. Then he made Pooja to the "Soma Skanda Moorthy"(Murugan sitting between Sivan and Sakthi) given to him by Maha Vishnu who made pooja to the idol for a long period. When the pooja was going on Musukundan got attracted by the Moorthy and he worshipped the moorthy with great pleasure. At that time, Sivan in the Moorthy told him to ask the Moorthy from Indiran and take the idol to earth and make pooja to it.

After the pooja, Indiran gave him food with the help of Kamadenu and also a lot of invaluable and rare jewels and then he asked what he wanted more. Now musukundan asked for the Somaskanda Moorthy he worshipped and Indiran inturn told that it was given to him by Maha Vishnu who worshipped it as manaseega Moorthy and if he gives the permission to take it he can give it. Immiadiately Musukundan went to Parkadal and he got the permission of Maha Vishnu.

But Indiran wanted to keep the idol with him since he loved it a lot. So he made 6 idols which look the same like the original Somaskanda Moorthy with the help of Deva Datchan and he gave the idols one by one every time saying that was the original one. But, the Sivan in the Duplicate ones didnt talk to Musukundan and he rejected all the duplicated ones saying that was not the original one. Finally, when Indira gave the original one to Musukundan, the Sivan in the idol told him to take that idol to earth. On seeing this, Indiran gave the rest 6 idols also to Musukundan and now Musukundan took all the 7 Soma Skanda Moorthys with him.

He established(Prstishtai) all the 7 idols at the same time in 7 temples through out South India and these temples are called Saptha Vidanga Stalangal. The places where Musukundan established the 7 idols are, Thiruvarur(Here the original one which was worshipped by Maha Vishnu and Indiran is established), Naga Pattinam(Thiru Nagai), Thiru nallaru, Thirukkaarayil, Thirukkolili, Thiru Vaaimiyur(Thiruvaaimur) and Thiru Marai Kadu(Vedaranyam).

In Thiruvarur, the Moorthy is called Veedi Vidangar, in Thiru Nagai Azhaga Vidangar, in Thiru Nallaru Nagara Vidangar, in Thiru Kaarayil Adhi Vidangar, in Thirukkolili Avani Vidangar, Thiruvaimur Neela Vidangar, and in Thiru Maraikkadu Buvani Vidangar and these seven stalas are called Saptha Vidanga Stalangal.
