Dear Members,

Many months back, one of our members had asked if

there could be regular postings of Periya Puranam (?),

i.e. the stories of the great ixty three Nayanmars.

I still do not know if this is possible, but here is

some interesting information.

Periya Puranam (in Cen-Tamil), supposedly builds upon

earlier works (not so-well known or distinct),

basically from the puranas.

Aeons ago during the time of Sage Vyasa, Suta and

other great Maharishis, the Upamanyu Shivabhakta

Vilasam was narrated by Sage Suta, Agastya and alike

to many Munis (especially at Naimisharanya).

Upmanyu Shivabhakta Vilasam appears in the

Skanda-Upa-Purana (Skandopa Purana), and also as

Upamnyu Bhaktavilasam in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana

and (___) [i forget the name of the purana].

The great fact about these works, as far as I

understand it, is that, these were (probably) written

even before the 63 saints were born, or perhaps even

before the onset of Kali-Era!

Here is a small gist of the work:-

As the great Maharishis were paying obeissance to Lord

Maheshwara at Kailas, they saw a powerful light

descend (and merge into Shiva??). As all of them

wondered in astonishment at the sight, the great sage

Upamanyu explained that it was none other than

" Sundara " (Sundaramurthy Swami), on further enquiry,

Sage Upamanyu narrates the lives of the exalted sixty

three devotees.

This was later recounted by the Great maharishi

Agastya.

However, the version of the Skandaopa Purana, begins

with the traditional invocation, followed by the Scene

of Sage Suta, in Naimisharanya answering the quieries

of many Munis and then proceeding to narrate the

stories of the sixty three devotees as recounted by

Sage Agastya.

Credible sources say that this book has been recently

been published by Ramanasramam.
