This is regarding fasts and festivals. Sanjevesh asked about karthikai

and shashti.

Shashti is from the root Shashtham or " Six " Shashti means " Sixth " .

Shashti is nothing but the sixth day of a paksha also called as

" pirai " in tamil. Shashti can be Shukla Shashti or Krishna Shashti.

Shukla Shashti falls on the sixth day after the new moon day of the

month while Krishna Shashti falls on the sixth day after the full moon

day of the month. Month here signifies the traditional month as in

Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshta, etc. or Mesha Vrushabha etc.

There is a book on Indian Fasts and festivals by Swami Sivananda in

the group's file section

dhandapaniE-Books/Hindu%20Fasts%20and%20Fes\

tivals.pdf

which may by of help in getting information.

Also I noticed a directory called Murugan Virathangal, which could

also be of help.
