In the early 1990s, Michael Woods produced a series of British

television documentaries about the first six civilizations of the

world. The one about India was excellent and much of it centered on

Tamil Nadu. It is clear from his work that he loves Tamil culture.

He even made a documentary on the making of the Indian section of the

civilization series. His particular love is Chidambaram. Well, that

really endeared him to me.

Early in 1997, we found THE SMILE OF MURUGAN at Higginbotham's in

Chennai. It was first published in 1995. First off, let me tell you

that the book is really not about Lord Murugan, but about

contemporary Tamil culture and its roots. But can you talk about

Tamil culture without talking about our Lord Murugan? He tells us

that the idea for the title came from Kamil Zvelebil. Zvelebil wrote

an excellent scholarly book on Murugan which I enjoyed reading and

still own, but cannot find right now so I cannot tell you the name.

If you are a Tamil from Tamil Nadu, you will not find anything very

new from the book, but you might enjoy seeing if he " got it right. "

If you are not from Tamil Nadu (Tamil or otherwise), you will find

this to be a loving introduction to a culture the author is learning

about. Much of it is learned while on pilgrimage via video bus.

Always remember that Woods, lover of Tamil culture or not, is a

journalist and journalistic writing always has a " popular " quality

about it.

If you want to read it depends on who you are. In any case, if there

are mistakes or omissions, you will probably forgive Woods because

everything he writes about Tamil culture is full of love and

admiration.
