Spiritual Stories Post #20 " Brahmachari's Touch "

Dear Members..

Here is yet another wonderful story from the series of stories by Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi. It says what we have heard at times. Appearances could be deceptive. Don't judge people by their appearance or what your hear about them or assume about by seeing their actions. The truth may be far from what we understand.

The story illustrates one of the leelas (pastimes) of Lord Krishna. It is through His pastimes He always gets closer to His devotees. His lovely leelas in Mahabharatha are innumerable and countless.

Hope you enjoy this yet another short story.

May All Glories be to Thirumal Marugan, Solai Malai Murugan !

Solaiappanukku Arohara !!!

The Story begins here

Brahmachari's Touch

SRI BHAGAVAN WARNED the hearers against the mistake of disparaging (*) a jnani for his apparent conduct and again cited the story of Parikshit. He was a still born child (*). The ladies cried and appealed to Sri Krishna to save the child. The sages round about wondered how Krishna was going to save the child from the effects of the arrows ( apandavastra) of Asvattama. Krishna said, " If the child be touched by one eternally celibate (nityabramachari) the child would be brought to life. " Even Suka dared not touch the child. Finding no one among the reputed saints bold enough to touch the child, Krishna went and touched it, saying, " If I am eternally celibate (

nityabramachari) may the child be brought to life. " The child began to breathe and later grew up to be Parikshit.

Just consider how Krishna surrounded by 16,000 gopis is a brahmachari! Such is the mystery of jivanmukti! A jivanmukta is one who does not see anything separate from the Self.

Yes, its very very interesting. This is not the first time that I have heard of Sri Krishna being a Brahmachari. It was a real puzzle because he was married and had children.

I got my answer when I came across a very interesting scripture. The situation was like this:

The gopis performed a prayer called Upavrata (I may be mistaken in the exact word) to pray that Lord Krishna should be their husband. Knowing this, Sri Krishna promised to return their love.

But when the gopis assembled on a full moon night to meet him for Rasa Leela, Sri Krishna spoke to them very in a very contrary way. He reminded them that they were chaste ladies, and was this the way for a chaste woman to behave?

Then the gopis pleaded with Him for mercy, and begged that He should not reject their suit.

And if you look at all the romantic episodes in Sri Krishna's incarnation, it was always the women who pleaded with him to be their Lord and He "out of mercy" obliged them. So He never had any self-interest in His leelas with the womenfolk.

In fact, this aspect of Sri Krishna's personality is emphasised because others should not blindly follow His actions.

I hope group members find this useful.

Thanks

Patricia

(I once attended a talk by a Swami from Chinmaya Mission, and he spoke that there were many rishis in Raam Avataar. When they say Lord Raam, they - who had given up desires!! - felt desire for Lord Raam. Many even wished they were women, just to express their love for Lord Raam. These persons, according to the Swami, were reborn as gopis in Sri Krishna Avataar to express their intense love for Him.

In fact, this aspect of Sri Krishna's personality (no self-interest or lust) is emphasised because others should not blindly follow His actions.

I hope group members find this useful.

Thanks
