Another member had posted sa stroy about the Murugan at Sikkil. As

propmised I am posting this story, another version as I knew it.

The sculptor, “Silppaa†was ordained ( by lord Himself ?) to sculpture Lord

Murugan idol at Sikkil.

Silppaa who was no means an ordinary man made such an wonderful piece made

to wonder people that it was Murugan who has come in person. The king (

whoever he was ) after seeing the beauty of the Lord at Sikkil ordered to

cut the thumb of the sculptor so that he will never imitate the same figure

again. Not withstanding that, the sculptor endowed with divine power on

Lords order made one more idol for Ettukudi. The day came when as per the

custom and practice the sculptor has to ‘open’ the eyes of the Lord. The

maker has requested to tie the Idol with a chain since there were every

possibility of Murugan sitting on a peacock to fly since there is so much

life on it. People and King laughed. When the sculptor opened the eyes the

idol with vibration started to fly. He had no other option but to throw

the chisel ( uli) damaging the peacock in the process enabling it to

return to earth. (That is why they never make a perfect sculpture. If it is

made to perfection according to silpa sastra, the sculpture will have a

life force of its own which will be activated. The sculpture would cause

certain effects with its life force. When such things are manifested, gross

mismanagement, pilfering, stealing, hoarding, etc., will be disrupted by

the life energy of the statues †" comment by a friend after reading the

story)

When the idol started flying people shouted ‘Etta pidi’ ( catch it ) which

in due course came to know Ettukkudi. People started showering praise on

Silppa. The king could not with stand that, he, with all jealousy ordered

Silppa eyes to be removed so that he will not repeat once again. But Lord

came in his dream asked to make one more and gave confidence in him that he

is indeed capable. He made with all fear once again fully assisted by his

daughter and made it to the temple at EnkaN where his eyes and thumb

returned to normal with divine grace and blessings.

The original sculpture of Sikkil is now at Poravachcheri a place near to

Sikkil. It is very much larger compared to the other two places Ettukkudi

and EnkaN. They are progressively smaller in size. Naturally since they

were made when the sculptor had lost his thumb and eyes. The first one, a

very large statue of Lord Murugan sitting on a peacock. It is made of a

single store. The whole weight of the statute is balanced on the two legs

of the peacock. One can observe the bulging nerves on the legs of the

peacock as if it is under strain. One can also see the finger nails of the

Lord if one observes closely. I do not have much vocabulary to describe

the minute details of the whole beauty. One has to see to believe it.

There different versions of the story but the commonality in all of them

are it was made by one single person

Another aspect to be noted is that this is the war path of the Lord to Thiruchendur.

The Lord's hand that holds His Mother's Vel, shows the nerve endings for the war pose.

How much ever we describe the beauty of the trio's it is only possible to be in ecstasty while being there. The vibrations are immense.

A similar experience can be got if you read thirupugazh on the songs of Enkann.

I would recommend reading the song "santhanam thimirnthanaintu" of en kann.
