Transliteration:

 

pEraasai enum piNiyil piNipatt— ,

Oraa vinaiyEn uzhala— thakumO

veeraa muthusoor padavEl eRiyum,

sooraa sura lOka thuranTharanE. 16

 

Meaning:

 

Afflicted by the deadly disease of insatiable desire,

Is it fair that I, of evil deeds and non-discrimination, suffer?

O Valorous One! O Undaunted Vel-Thrower

As to destroy the age-old Sura! O Devaloka-Protector!

 

" O Lord, Who is an embodiment of courage! O Undaunted One, Who threw

the Vel as to destroy the age-old Surapadman! O You, Who took the

responsibility of protecting Devaloka! Should I, of such evil Karmas

as cannot discriminate, be tossed about, and afflicted by the

disease of inordinate desire! Is it fair, O Lord? "

 

 

Detailed Commentary:

 

Praying to God is no easy task

Even the practice of the Divine Name, as prayed for in the previous

verse, is difficult of achievement for people, because of desires.

It is no wonder that people often think it a mere waste of time to

sit and utter the Lord's Name. Their inordinate desire for wealth

and enjoyment does not allow them to sit quietly even for a few

minutes, think of the Lord and enjoy inner peace. What a power these

desires have! They shake the very personality, agitate the mind and

senses, and allow not man to be peaceful. Man is fooled by his

desires that make him move outward, strive for wealth and pleasures

which are not lasting and which bring pain in their train. People

are helplessly tossed about by their desires. Poor man! He does not

know that he is a puppet moved by desires. How aptly did Arjuna ask

Lord Krishna, " Impelled by what, O Lord, does man commit sin, though

against his wishes, constrained, at it were, by force? " And the

blessed Lord revealed the fact, the secret of secrets, that it is

this desire and this anger that are the causes of all sinful deeds,

that prompt men to sinful action, much against their wishes. Desire

and anger (anger is only another form of desire) are the causes of

human suffering. All sins can ultimately be traced to these two

violent forces. This world-show is kept up by desires.

 

Desires are insatiable

Desires are insatiable. The more we give them, the more they want.

It is like pouring ghee over fire that will burn brighter consuming

the ghee and wanting more. Every satisfaction adds strength to

desire which craves further satisfaction. And if anything stands in

the way of its satisfaction, it causes anger; and we know the

disastrous consequences of anger. Man loses his balance and becomes

verily a beast. So much for desires.

 

Thus, desires lead to undesirable results, whereas the practice of

the Divine Name is sweet and soothing even while being uttered,

brings solace to the heart and in the end bestows salvation to the

soul. Yet, the inordinate desires goad man to strive for the

perishable things of the world and make him suffer throughout. He

revolves, caught up in this wheel of desires — now for this and now

for that. Man is nothing but a tool in the hands of desires.

This is a brilliant verse.

 

Aasai and per aasai, why does Guru Arunagiri choose peraasai and not

aasai ?

Aasai traps you in birth and death cycle, peraasai puts pini in picture.

Obsessive compulsive desire is worth only for God's service and

service to others.

While it is your dharma to own a home as aasai it becomes peraasai to

own many homes, just as an example.

Accumulation of wealth in non dharmic ways promotes an air of karma

that invariably results in ill health or other negation. Indriam do

their duty in propelling us towards peraasai, peraasai then propels

towards ego and arrogance.

Suran is classified as personification of Arrogance and Ego, the Lord

who threw his Gyana vel (light of knowledge) towards the root of tree

(prior to yielding mangos) in the bottom of the samsaric cosmic ocean

and split it into eternal blue bird that dances and the bird that

signals the Dawn is our only salvation.

Dear Mr. Ravi..

 

Excellent interpretation. Many people get confused with desires which are permissible and desires which take you away from your path towards righteousness and this interpretation very clearly tells the difference.

 

That is one can have desires permitted dharmically though still that binds towards birth and death through karma. This karma and desire satisfies our basic needs without which it may not be easy for a common man to proceed towards God realization practically. However even these permissible desires have Karma associated with them and can bind you with birth and death, but if done with an intention in the consciousness that these desires are not in attempt of satisfying oneself but in service of Lrod in dedication to Him, then we are devoid of the resultant Karma. That is things that are permitted dharmically, if dedicated to Him and then used or accepted will be devoid of the karma. For example even our daily food, if offered to Him and then consumed not only we are free from the karma of it, our souls also get purified. Even things you buy if they are offered before Lord Muruga before using them then the karma associated with them or by using them will be removed. If children can offer their books before Him and then start learning they not only pass the exams, the knowledge they gain will elevate them further in their journey of life and as a person. When we seek guidance from Him we will not be pestered too much from those pErAsai (or obsessions and greed). Whenever we think of His Vel our mind becomes clear. Try imagining it in its most beautiful shape adorned with the most precious gems and diamonds and decorated majestically with the holy ash. The vision of it instantly will cleanse our mind and take us towards His lotus feet.

 

Among all uttering His names as many times as possible is the easiest and most effective. In this case we dont need o think of complicated things at all. Just things become clear to us just by uttering his name. If not people like Sri Ramakrishna Parama Hamsa or Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi wouldnt have become great souls knowledgible of Truth revealed in the Vedas without formal education. Knowledge doesnt come by reading books or by going to schools only. It can come to you just by uttering His name only. So is the power and grace of the Beautiful Lord Muruga.
