On Ekasadi, genreally one refrains from any kind of food, However, person who is involved in devotional service is advised to fast from grain so that he can execute his service nicely. That means one can take non-grain on Ekadasi. This is approved by Lord Chaitanya, when He requested his mother not to take any grain on Ekadasi day. A person who can't fast completely can eat non-grains, grain is strictly prohibited to take on Ekadasi, as pap-purua (sin personified) is allowed to take shelter in grain on Ekadasi day, and those who take grains on Ekadasi, eats only sin. However, there is one Ekadasi called Nirjala (comes once in a year), on this Ekadasi, one has to avoid water also. Your Servant.
