Chaithanya Mahaprabhu recommends Sri Krishna Sankirtan

Five hundred years ago Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the incarnation of Lord Krishna in the form of his devotee wrote the following words :

"ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam sreyah-kairava-candrika-vitaranam vidya-vadhu-jivanam anandambudhi-vardhanam prati-padam purnamrtasvadanam sarvatma-snapanam param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam "

("All glories to the Sri Krishna Sankirtan, which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years and extinguishes the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death. This sankirtan movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge. It increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it enables us to fully taste the nectar for which we are always anxious." ) Siksastakam 1

Lord Caitanya taught a most sublime process by which the living entities who are suffering this material world can taste the sweetest nectar at every minute, in all times, places, and circumstances. This sweetest essence of existence is best described in a nutshell by the term “Krishna consciousness.”

Krishna consciousness is the original, natural energy of the living being. Just as fish is naturally meant to be in the water, the living being is naturally meant to be Krishna conscious. Our present position is like a fish washed up on the shore. We have been thrown so far inland that we have no access to the water. Even though we have so many very nice arrangements to enjoy here on the land, this material existence, because we are currently out of touch with our original spiritual nature, we cannot be truly happy and peaceful no matter what kind of arrangements we make here.

Somehow we have to get ourselves back into the water. This is why Krishna consciousness is an absolute necessity. Having been pleased with our devotion Bhagavan Krishna picks us up and throws us back into the water, in which we can again experience that nectar that we have been hankering after for many millions of lifetimes.

If you want factual Krishna consciousness, you must go to someone who possesses it. Would you go to a bakery to fix your flat tire?

Sri Krishna , the Supreme Godhead is emanating us from Himself at every second for the purpose of enjoying a loving relationship with us. This, indeed, is the very reason for our existence. We do not exist because our parents had sex. This may explain the existence of our material body, but it certainly does not explain our existence as eternal spiritual beings. Our spiritual existence is eternal, full of bliss, and full of knowledge. We are simply meant to have unlimited loving pastimes with the Supreme Person.

By foolishly misidentifying ourselves with these temporary material bodies that are full of ignorance and misery we are simply cheating ourselves. There is not much more to be said in this connection.

ye hi samsparsa-ja bhoga

duhkha-yonaya eva te

ady-antavantah kaunteya

na tesu ramate budhah

( “An intelligent person does not take part in the sources of misery, which are due to contact with the material senses. O son of Kunti, such pleasures have a beginning and an end, and so the wise man does not delight in them.” Bhagavad-gita 5.22 )

Under the guidance of the genuine Servant of Sri Krishna , who carefully trains us in the principles of bhakti yoga, we can become nicely absorbed in Krishna consciousness 24 hours a day and truly taste the sweetest nectar at every minute. It is foolish to continue suffering when you can taste unlimited ever-increasing happiness at every minute. Just try to awaken your dormant Krishna

consciousness ; you’ll be glad you did.
