Hare Krishna. Pranam to all Vaishnavas,

Whatever prosperity or misery a person experiences in this life are, the results of his/her ‘karma’ (deeds) in previous birth(s).

Now, the natural question is, what can help to alleviate the current suffering? The answer lies in our very own Brahma-Samhita - "karmani nirdahati kintu ca bhakti bajam".(The performance of bhakti (devotional service), to the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna, is the only way to "burn to ashes", the karmic reactions that is waiting on us.)Ok, how to perform devotional service to Krishna? Where to start? The scriptures say, "sevonmukhe hi jihva 'dau". The first and foremost activity is to engage your tongue in the service of the Lord. How? By surrendering to the Lord, chanting his holy names and tasting his prasadam (sanctified food offered to Lord Krishna).Lord Krishna says in Gita 18.65 – 66 :”Fix your mind on Me, become My devotee, offer service to Me, bow down to Me, and you shall certainly reach Me. I promise you because you are My very dear friend. Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me completely with faith and devotion. I shall liberate you from all sinful reactions . Do not grieve.”

Note - : The miraculous escape of Vaishnavo devi temple and lakhs of devotees from the recent terrible earthquake in Jammu & Kashmir , confirms that Krishna-bhakti is the remedy to escape from Natural calamities .
