Overcoming All Obstacles

In this material world we face so many obstacles on a daily basis. Overall the biggest obstacles are birth, death, old age, and disease. If we can conquer over these four obstacles by taking complete shelter of Krishna, all other obstacles will dwindle away into insignificance.

samasrita ye pada-pallava-plavam

mahat-padam punya-yaso murareh

bhavambudhir vatsa-padam param padam

padam padam yad vipadam na tesam

( "For those who have accepted the boat of the lotus feet of the Lord, who is the shelter of the cosmic manifestation and is famous as Murari, the enemy of the Mura demon, the ocean of the material world is like the water contained in a calf's hoof-print. Their goal is param padam, Vaikuntha, the place where there are no material miseries, not the place where there is danger at every step." Srimad Bhagavatam 10.14.58 )

Will Chanting Hare Krishna Enable One to Attain ‘Nirvikalpa Samadhi’?

Revered Prabhu,

Is it possible for a devotee to attain the state of Nirvikalpa Samadhi (state of no mind) through the chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra?

Kindly enlighten me.

Love & Best Wishes,

Lilakanta

Yes , Hare Krishna Mantra leads to ‘Nirvikalpa Samadhi’

My Dear Lilakanta,

Please accept my blessings. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Chanting Hare Krishna is the authorized process for attaining nirvikalpa samadhi. I beg you to inform you that ‘nirvikalpa samadhi’ does not mean "no mind." It means "no material mind" because the pure devotee of Krishna completely spiritualizes his mind. The stage of ‘nirvikalpa-samadhi’ means that one fully merges himself into thinking of Bhagavan Krishna with complete absorption in the name, fame, pastimes, entourage, qualities, and paraphernalia of the Bhagavan. Such a perfected being chants the glories of the Bhagavan, and by his sight he begins to see the Bhagavan personally present before him. Thus all his activities became concentrated upon the Bhagavan without deviation. This is the highest stage of perfection, and it is possible for everyone to attain this stage by practice of devotional service. The devotional service of the Bhagavan consists of nine principles of service activities, and they are (1) hearing, (2) chanting, (3) remembering, (4) serving the Bhagavan's lotus feet, (5) worshiping, (6) praying, (7) executing

the Bhagavan's orders, (8) fraternizing, and (9) fully surrendering.

Any one of them or all of them are equally competent to award the desired result, but they require to be practiced persistently in accordance with Bhagavan’s instructions. The first item, hearing, is the most important item of all, and therefore hearing of the Bhagavad-gita and, later on, Srimad-Bhagavatam is essential for the serious candidate who wants to attain the stage of ‘nirvikalpa samadhi’ at the end of his life.

Every man or animal must die at a certain stage of life, but one who dies in the state of ‘nirvikalpa samadhi’ attains perfection, and one who dies forced by the laws of nature dies like an animal. That is the difference between a man and an animal. The human form of life is especially meant for achieving ‘nirvikalpa samadhi.’

Hoping this meets you in good health,

Always your well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari
