What do you feel in the presence of a saint? Do you feel anxious or relaxed? Do you feel calm and peaceful, or irritated? Do you feel all problem will be surmounted, or do you feel more and more problems will be created?

Depending on how you feel in the presence of a spiritually awakened soul, you can make a clear judgement. If you feel irritated, or underconfident,or unsure, and tense in the presence of a saint, then the so called saint may be a pretender. If however you feel relaxed, calm, sure that you will overcome all obstacles, then surely you are in the presence of a true saint. A saint will never taunt you or harass you or compell you for money or any such thing. Saints are peaceful, strongly resolved within, always in tune with the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna, and are blissful. They overcome problems with a smile. Dont let false gurus cheat you. Every guru must pass a test and that test is always designed by a disciple. Oncesuch a Guru passes such a test, he becomes even more elevated.

Beware of self-appointed Gurus. They are putting very big Tilakas or smearing ash on their foreheads and showing off their spirituality, looking down upon the common folks and indulging in double-speak. Avoid company of false saints. Let the Lord lead you to truthful persons.

Recently I met a saint who lives alone, seeks no followers, survives by his own efforts, requires no help, and at the age of 90 he is still practicing homeopathic medicine, treating people freely, and never claims anything about his achievements, but I have felt deep bliss in his company. He lives in Bangalore. I talked to him about Srila Prabhupada, and he was quite happy to hear the efforts done by Srila Prabhupada. Although he belongs to the sampradaya of Lord Siva (the Ramakrishna Order of saints) he has all the qualities of a perfected being, has attained the simplicity and humility which a true devotee must have, and has been performing all his duties without seeking rewards.

From him I learnt what it is to be blissful. Bereft of any desire for positions (either in the material sphere, or in the spiritual sphere) and always blissful in the mellows of the Srimad Bhagvatam, Gita and other spiritual literatures, such a person leads the life of a Jeevan Mukta (liberated while still in body) and can bless everyone who comes to him.

One must seek such personalities, wherever they are, and serve them, for the benefits of serving devotees of the devotees of the devotees of Krishna are great indeed. Irrespective of whether the person is a Siva Bhakta or a Krishna Bhakta one must try to associate with true devotees. By logic, as Lord Siva is Param vaishnava, all true disciples of Lord Siva are Vaishnavas.

Those who seek to differentiate between Siva and Krishna are actually quite foolish, because the mysteries that encompass the relationship of Krishna and Siva are not known to many, only a handful ofsouls know them.

Once during the Rasa Lila in Vrindavana, when Lord Siva also joined in, assuming the form of a Gopi, but when the Lord Krishna saw him, he said : "Baba! Aaap Bhi?" meaning "Oh Lord Siva! You too want to dance like a Gopi?" Such is the wonderful relationship.

You all may be familiar with the story of Lord Aiyappa, who was born as the son of Mohini (Lord Vishnu in female form) and Siva as his father. Although Lord Vishnu is mainly known in His male forms, Mohini is one of His rare pastimes as a female form, and he associates with Lord Siva to give birth to Lord Aiyappa.

ALL GLORIES to SRILA PRABHUPADA!

by whose grace I am able to see the truth in theright perspective.

Jai Sri KRISHNA
