Checking out the newspapers provided for me by the airline I am horrified to see how degraded the current Indian society has become. Practically all vestiges of Vedic culture are dead and gone. Where are the enlightened leaders of days gone by? Before 5,000 years ago the enlightened kings of India ruled the entire planet Earth under the enlightened guidance of such great stalwart personalities as Sages Vedavyasa and Suka . In today's society the politicians , athletes, and entertainers are given more prominence. No wonder the entire fabric of the global human society is so rapidly deteriorating. It will take an extraordinary miracle to pull the human society out of its nosedive into utter chaos. The signs are already there. Just see what is happening in France right now. Poet Yeats wrote, "Things fall apart. The center cannot hold. Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world." This is a fact. Without Krishna-bhakti , everything will deteriorate . Having arrived in Bangalore we are seeing how advanced this city is materially. There is a major presence of many American high tech corporations such as IBM, Intel, and Dell. But in spite of all material progress we are sad to note that the spirituality is so much deteriorating. Traveling the streets between our residence and the ISKCON Jagannath Temple we see how much people are running unnecessarily after material sense gratification. Of course there is nothing wrong with material sense gratification to the extent required to keep body and soul together. But to expend our energy beyond that is a useless waste of time. It entangles us in the false bodily conception of life and obliges us to take birth again the lower species such as the plant kingdom or the animal kingdom. As human beings we are meant to utilize this rare opportunity to re-awaken our dormant enlightened consciousness, our Krishna-bhakti . Of course, there is no harm in material advancement if simultaneously we advance spiritually. But if our material advancement is at the cost of our spiritual advancement, it is better than we keep our material life very simple. Instead of plain living and high thinking we have a society based on the principle of high living with no thinking. A life devoid of spiritual understanding is not worth living. What do we gain by it? In such a life we merely play our role on the stage of human existence for a few years and then get demoted down to the lower species for many, many lifetimes. Human existence is meant for self-realization. It is not meant for imitating the ways of the animals. If you care at all about the unfortunate suffering people of this world, kindly dedicate yourself fully to promote Krishna –bhakti . Your life will be filled up with highest happiness at every moment, and you will be able to always give the highest happiness to all others.
