Guest guest
Hare Krishna, After narrating the entire Bhagavata Purana to King Pareekshit before an assembly of eminent sages, Sage Suka summed up the merit of chanting the Divine name, which is the quintessence of the teachings of this scriptural text, " I salute Sri Hari (the dispeller of all fears and agony), the Supreme Lord, the loud chanting of whose names is the most efficacious and easiest way to wipe out all sins and respectful salutation to whom alleviates all suffering. " Sankara in his commentary on one of the introductory verses to the Vishnu Sahasranama notes that among all the purifying rituals it is Lord Narayana's name which is the highest, " Even if evil-minded people think of Hari, by the fact that they remembered Him, He removes their sins, like even if one accidentally touches fire, it will burn him... This is a praise of the Divine name. " Pareekshit was an exemplar of how a devotee should listen to the glory of the Lord. When he was cursed to die in seven days' time the king who wanted to expiate for his misdeed and realise God sought out Suka. The sage told him that listening to the glory of the Almighty would deliver him from bondage and also narrated the divine deeds of the Lord in His descents. The Bhagavata notes that the king listened with rapt attention to the exposition with determination to die of starvation (to make amends for the humiliation he caused to the sage who was in meditation by throwing a dead snake on his person) without even drinking water. Understanding the rationale of the whole exercise (atonement for the curse) Pareekshit especially wished to listen to Gajendra's liberation as the elephant by dint of latent tendency (Vasana) of its previous birth (as King Indradyumna) called out to the Lord when all its kith and kin deserted it. The struggle between the king of elephants and the alligator had gone on for a thousand years and initially its mates had tried to help but in course of time they were also helpless and left it to its fate. It was only when Gajendra realised that no one could come to its aid that it providentially remembered the Almighty and surrendered to Him uttering His name. The Lord rushed to its side on His mount, Garuda, and not only saved it but also granted mukti (liberation) .
