After defeating the arrogant and immoral demon king Ravana, the Lord Sri Rama and His brother Lakshmana came back with Sita Devi, rescuing her from the regions of Sri Lanka where she had been kept captive by Ravana. To celebrate the return of Lord Rama, people in the South of India observe Diwali (Deepavali) early morning, whereas the people in the North observe Deepavali (Diwali) in the night. The transit time travelling from South of India to North of India took just a day, because the Lord travelled in the vimana (airplane) called Pushpak. The Lord is transcendental, He doesn't even need a Vimana, but for the sake of posterity, he showed the world a faster way to travel. When He reached Ayodhya, he found the city was lit with so many lights, lamps in honor of his valiant victory over Ravana. Thus the residents of Ayodhya were happy at last, having seen the return of their Lord, and they rejoiced with sweets and lit their city with lamps. This Diwali celebration marks the victory of Lord Rama over evil. We chant the Holy name of Rama as many times as we chant the Holy name of Krishna, in the Mahamantra -

Hare krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

In the Sri Vishnu Sahasranaamam there is a wonderul verse which the Lord declared as equal to chanting the 1000 names in Vishnu Sahasranaamam . This verse is as follows:-

Sri Rama Rama Rameti Rame Raame Manorame

Sahasranaam Tatulyam Rama Nama Varanane

The Lord himself declares that the Holy name of Rama chanted even once is equal to his 1000 names chanted in the vishnu Sahasranama. Thus, those who are chanting the Hare krishna Mahamantra given to us so kindly by the Lord Himself in the form of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, those lucky souls are always doing the highest service to the Lord. Chanting Harinam is the most perfect act of service to the Lord and should be done very very sincerely, with full attention, and offenses must be totally avoided during this chanting process as the Lord is directly observing is at this time when we chant His name.

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.
