Vathalayadishwara! Extreme mercy of the Lord -by K.T. in Sept 1967 Although 10 years had passed, it looked as though it happened yesterday. Those were memorable years, when we were staying in Mission Hospital in Vellore in connection with my wife’s treatment. We were there along with her mother for four months. In fact our decision to go to Vellore was a hasty one. It was rheumatic disease and we tried Ayurveda and Homeopathy treatment. The doctors who treated her were highly skilled. However the illness only aggravated either because of the treatment or in spite of it. She was not only not able to walk but also to get up and stand.

The joints in her knee-cap were so stiff that she could not straighten her bend legs. She was bed-ridden with her mind and body exhausted. Days and months passed like this. We did not know what to do further. At last we decided to go to the famous Vellore hospital. There was no one there known to us to help us. To say this is not the truth. There was “one-the unknown companion”, the best friend described in Puranjanopakyana *. Even if we did not remember Him,

He is the one who does not distance Himself ; even if the disciple leaves the one who never abandons – Ivan eka bandhu, my nandanandanan- who helps in need- Guruvayurappan. Only by His Grace we resorted to Vellore. After reaching there many tests and treatments were undertaken, but there was no improvement. Days passed like this. She was given different treatments aimed at

straightening her knee joints but in vain. It was then decided to try a bag filled with sand which was hung tied to the tip of the leg in raised position. It was very painful. To give some relief the load was removed for some time but the legs were hung again. Like this several days passed. Except suffering extreme pain nothing happened. There was an opinion among the medical authorities that the treatment once started should not be interrupted like this. That was why there was no cure, it was said. So the next day

morning the treatment was started and it was not disturbed for a long time. By noon the pain became unbearable and the patient started weeping . The hospital official whom we approached said that the treatment should not be interrupted. If something was to be done orders have to be got from the top. When we thus found there was no human being available at the moment to relieve the patient’s pain, we intensified our prayers to Guruvayurappan, who is the saviour of mankind. We cried our heart out: “ In spite of our worshipping you constantly and wishing to intensify our prayers even more and constructing a house near the temple for that purpose, we are not able to lead a meaningful life. Instead, we are spending our days in a strange place, hundreds of miles away and suffering excruciating pain. We are unable to suffer any longer this pain which goes on increasing. Now it will be Guruvayurappan’s uchcha (noon-valiya puja) when the Lord gives darshan to hundreds of devotees. Please extend your unseen blessing here also”, we cried, and thereby let us be blessed and relieved of our sufferings. Then an unexpected event happened. The one who was an ardent devotee of Guruvayurappan, who had experienced the grace of the Lord and who was His pupil, the well known Madras Krishna Iyer, glory to his memory – appeared there calling “Guruvayurappa, Hare”. With him was Dr Nedungadi, another great devotee. It was then that we understood the meaning “Yadaachuta janagame” described in the Srimad Bhagavatham. By simply having darshan of those two holy men who reminded us of the glory of Guruvayurappan, we felt as if our physical and mental illnesses were totally destroyed. Krishna Iyer had bought with him the garland and sandal paste which adorned the Lord in his house and naivedyam offered. He gave all this and blessed us. And Dr. Nedungadi who saw the way the patient was subjected to suffering removed all the bandages and material used for hanging the patient’s legs. He said he would speak to the Chief Medical Officer. They left after spending some time with us. With the unexpected visit of these holy men and their darshan we felt our bad time was over. It looked as if we had crossed a path which was full of perils. The hospital authorities changed the line of treatment. Another skilled specialist took over. He tried some new treatment on which he was conducting experiment. Within four months, the patient who was brought in a stretcher, was completely cured. She walked by herself and left the hospital. Everyone considered that her cure indicated the success of an experiment in Medical science. It was also stressed it was above all due to the mercy of Lord Guruvayurappan. As we were leaving the hospital, an old woman came near us, stroked my wife’s head with love and affection and said: “From now on, at every step don’t forget the Lord’s mercy”. We all wept hearing these words. There is no doubt that the readers will read this

experience of ours as one proving the extreme mercy of Bhagavan towards His devotees. *The story of Puranjan occurs in detail in the Shrimad Bhagavata Purana

Book IV, Chapters 25-39 The above was an extract from a great book –Sri Krishna The Lord of Guruvayur Divine Experiences by Sri K.R.Vaidyanathan, Bhavan’s Book University. It has the English translation of real experiences of our Bhagavan’s grace narrated by readers of the “Sri Guruvayurappan”–a monthly magazine of the Sri Guruvayurappan Sankeerthana Trust, founded by Thirunamacharya Shri Anjam Madhavan Nambudiri (1918-1988), a scholar devotee who held vast audiences spellbound by his inimitable discourses on Bhagavata and the Namasankirtan. I request all our group members(who are rs of the “Sri Guruvayurappan” monthly magazine) to provide me with the scanned pages of Anubhava Katha columns. I wish to translate it

into English so that we all can be blessed by knowing more and more about our Guruvayurappan’s Karunyam. So, if any of you out there has any volume, any month, any year-old or new issues, kindly help me in this project by sending those pages to me. Thanks in advance.
