Lord Guruvayoorappan-the Bhakthavatsalan Respite From Extreme Illness By K.K.Menon in April 1968 It happened twenty years ago. She was extremely sick, fighting with death. Her revered father, Mallisseri Nambudiri was a trustee of Guruvayur temple. From childhood she was extremely devoted to Lord Guruvayurappan and was instilling this bhakthi and belief in her children and grandchildren right from childhood. “The faith in Lord Guruvayurappan is our family property”, she often said. She always called Lord Guruvayurappan for anything giving no respite to Bhagavan. Children often teased her saying, “Let the Lord be spared sometime to hear others’ prayers”. At this she

got angry and gave ‘tit for tat’: “You don’t know anything. You have reached this status, not because of your abilities but because of Lord Guruvayurappan’s grace. For the past 50 years, has any astrologer pointed out anything wrong in the family ?” ,she asked. Then everybody kept mum. The children knew the truth of what she said. At the time of her marriage, her husband Shri Paarakattu Damodara Menon was an ordinary employee. Gradually he came up. In the same office, Kochi Secretariat, which he entered holding a small position, he rose to the highest post of Diwanji. He was also a model to other people. His success in life was one of the basic reasons to instill bhakthi in his wife, Netium Veettil Chinnamma, which she passed on to their offspring. She was nearly 70. She was weak because of age. She had absolutely no taste for food. Her weakness grew gradually. Dr. Krishna Iyer was her doctor. He was not merely a family doctor but a friend too. He came twice daily and examined her. When she lost her appetite, he

increased her medicine dose. Since he could not locate her nerves he could not inject her. Morever he did not like to cause any pain to her. She lay closing her eyes always. She did not respond to anybody’s call. “ Let all children come”, said the doctor and they all came. One day at dusk, she lay absolutely still without any sort of movement, her eyes closed. It looked as if she had lost all her senses. Her breathing was also slow. At that moment, Dr. Gauri Amma appeared to come there to see a new born child and its mother. Seeing a number of people standing outside, she smelt

something wrong and someone told her that mother was seriously ill. She went straight to her room and examined her. She saw on the table a vessel containing tirtha (holy water). She took a few drops and poured it in her mouth and touched her feet. The doctor then came out and said: “ I am lucky to have come at the nick of time and give thirtha to her”. She went away without seeing her patient. At the gate she met Dr. Krishna Iyer. He also went inside and came out. Meanwhile, arrangements had been made to give gifts etc., usual on such occasions. The doctor said at the most she might live upto 12 o’clock. “I will come afterwards”, he said and left. They started making necessary preparations. People went here and there to get the necessary things for the last journey. That was because, later, the shops would be closed and it would be difficult to get things. The old woman’s son-in-law, Shri Rama Varma Thampuran was there. Two ashta vaidyas had come to see him. They also examined the patient and said it was good that “preparations were being made” and went away. She was Mahalakshmi of the family, the light that sheds luck – that light is going to extinguish. Even our Dr. Krishna Iyer and Dr.Gauriamma had given up hope. Everyone was convinced that except Lord Guruvayurappan there was no one to

whom we could resort – anyatha saranam naasthi. Then, Chinna, wife of Thalasseri District Judge, Sri Narayana Menon, hit upon an idea. She said with emotion: “Now, till Mummy opens her eyes and takes something, we will not get up from here and take anything, we will go on chanting ‘Narayana’ and see if Guruvayurappan is there, whom mother has been calling all her life.” Immediately everyone sat around ‘mummy’ and started namajapa, calling the Lord. It appeared that Lord Guruvayurappan could no longer sit quiet. It was 12 o’clock. Suddenly the patient opened her eyes and looked

around again and again. Was it a dream or whim? No, she was moving her lips while we were dumb. She asked in clear voice for barley water. She took an ounce. When Ajamila uttered just once the word ‘Narayana’, Yamadharmaraja ordered his servants not to go anywhere near him. Hence there is no wonder- when the entire room resounded with the chant of ‘Narayana ’ and prayers to Lord Guruvayurappan, the servants of Yama ran away without entering there. When we realized that Lord heard our prayers

we became enthusiastic and our faith in the Lord increased manifold. Another half an hour passed and she asked again for milk and drank it. Her eyes were wide open and she asked: “ Why, nobody slept yet, what is the time?” This was followed by several other questions. It was nearly 3 o’clock. Meanwhile the doctor was returning after some emergency visit. In those days he often visited patients even late in the night. He stopped the car at the gate and heard absolutely no sound. He walked slowly and said he thought he would just enquire

if all was over. When he peeped inside we welcomed him saying.” Come on, doctor”. He came near her and examined her. He asked her “what happened?”. To this her answer was: “Why did you frighten all the children?”. The doctor also laughed loudly. He said let someone be near her and “I would come tomorrow morning. It is all Guruvayurappan’s grace” and left.

Within a week she started walking as usual and going to her room to sit before Lord Guruvayurappan and pray. She lived another five years with her family members enjoying all happiness and prosperity. As Shri Narayana Bhattatiri sang in his last but one sloka of Narayaneeyam, “Yogindranaam---”, those who resort to the Lord’s feet which are the most charming of all His limbs, are granted the prosperity of complete Bliss Supreme, dispelling all their distresses. The above was an extract from a great book –Sri Krishna The Lord of Guruvayur Divine Experiences by Sri K.R.Vaidyanathan, Bhavan’s Book University. It has the English translation of real experiences of our Bhagavan’s grace narrated by readers of the “Sri Guruvayurappan”–a monthly magazine of the Sri Guruvayurappan Sankeerthana Trust, founded by Thirunamacharya Shri Anjam Madhavan Nambudiri (1918-1988), a scholar devotee who held vast audiences spellbound by his inimitable discourses on Bhagavata and the Namasankirtan. Now, his brother Shri Anjam Krishnan Nambudiri is the Managing Editor of the magazine. I request all our group members(who are rs of the “Sri

Guruvayurappan” monthly magazine) to provide me with the scanned pages of “Anubhava Katha” columns. I wish to translate it into English so that we all can be blessed by knowing more and more about our Guruvayurappan’s Karunyam. So, if any of you out there has any volume, any month, any year-old or new issues, kindly help me in this project by sending those pages to me. Thanks in advance.
