Guest guest
Hare KrsnaO son of Kunti, all that you do, all that you eat, all that you offer and give away, as well as all austerities that you may perform, should be done as an offering unto Me. GITA 9:27 Thus, it is the duty of everyone to mold his life in such a way that he will not forget Krsna in any circumstance. Everyone has to work for maintenance of his body and soul together, and Krsna recommends herein that one should work for Him. Everyone has to eat something to live; therefore he should accept the remnants of foodstuffs offered to Krsna. Any civilized man has to perform some religious ritualistic ceremonies; therefore Krsna recommends, "Do it for Me," and this is called arcana. Everyone has a tendency to give something in charity; Krsna says, "Give it to Me," and this means that all surplus money accumulated should be utilized in furthering the Krsna consciousness movement. Nowadays people are very much inclined to the meditational process, which is not practical in this age, but if anyone practices meditating on Krsna twenty-four hours by chanting the Hare Krsna mantra round his beads, he is surely the greatest yogi. as substantiated by the Sixth Chapter of Bhagavad-gita. Three Types of Activities - Work, Service, and Worship (Karma, Seva, Puja) Activities can be performed in three different ways i.e. Anything that we do, can be done in three ways - 1. Doing something as "work," e.g. like a servant does household chores 2. Doing as "service," a serving attitude e.g. caring for elderly parents. In this way, there is a feeling of reverence, and desire to give the person happiness, and with this expression (or seva bhava) there is a certain kind of joy that is generated within. 3. Doing all activities as "worship" of God. In this expression, all activities become a worship of God, just like praying. There is special feeling within (bhava), as if whatever is being done is being done for God. There is a very special joy in doing everything as worship of God. Simply by this vision (darshan) you experience a special one-ness inside. Just like by simply thinking of a great Soul, you experience happiness and peace within. In all three, the actions are the same, however there is great significance to performing all activities as worshipful reverence for God. With this feeling (bhava) if you do anything, you will experience a very special joy. Lord Krishna says in the Gita 9:27 - "Yat Karoshi, yad asnaasi, yaj juhosi dadaasi yat….." Everything I am doing, I am doing for You – God. Even those activities that are being done for taking care of this body, personal cleanliness, eating food, are for God. Just like a child often eats just to please the mother. God becomes very happy (prasanna), when we do everything for Him. When everything is being done for His happiness, all activities become a worship of God. Therefore there is great importance given to worship (pujan). A realized Soul, has a deep feeling of performing every action only for God, therefore even when the body of such a great Soul leaves this earth, the environment around becomes pure, sanctified, and one experiences joy and peace. This joyfulness (prasannataa) that one experiences within is worship (Puja) of God. This feeling of worshipful reverence, if real and honest, it will result in inner purity. This kind of worship (devotion) comes from feeling of mine-ness. This feeling of mine-ness (apnaapan) is extremely powerful tool and brings immense inner strength, devotion and very quickly the realization of God. With this feeling of mine-ness, devotion will become natural. That devotee will no longer be disturbed by desire for enjoyment / pleasure (Bhog) or desire for Salvation (Moksha). Both these will no longer have a binding force on the devotee. Simply by remembering God, the devotee becomes intensely joyful within. This is a very special, very divine, very unusual feeling that is experienced within by a devotee, and it is very difficult for most people to comprehend. Guest guest
Dear all, Pardon me for a small correction. Shri. Capilji says "Any civilized man has to perform some religious ritualistic ceremonies; therefore Krsna recommends, "Do it for Me," and this is called arcana. Everyone has a tendency to give something in charity; Krsna says, "Give it to Me," and this means that all surplus money accumulated should be utilized in furthering the Krsna consciousness movement." What I would like to say is, Krsna has not said "Give it to Me" or "give the surplus money to the Krishna Consciousness Movement" What He has said is, to quote Gita, " YAT KAROSHI YAT ASNASI, YAT JUHOSHI DADAASI YAT, YAT TAPASYASI KOUNTHEYA, TAT KURUSHWA MAD-ARPANAM." Gita. IX-27.  (Whatever you do, eat, sacrifice, offer as a gift, perform an austerity, O Arjuna, do all this as a dedication to Me.") My point is that it is a mental concept, if you feed a poor man, or give some charity or do any meditation, or anything else, consider it as being offered to Me.  Considering as an offering to the Lord mentally, and give all one's surplus money to the Krishna Consciousness-- somebody may dump all his money into the hundi in a temple, which will ultimately be taken away by some politicians as is happening these days, cannot be considered as an offering to the Lord. Am I right? Guest guest
Hare Krsna. Thanks to Gopalakrishna ji for the explanation. I stand corrected. It is my opinion that when Srila Prabhupada, in the PURPORT to GITA 9:27, advised devotees: Krsna says, "Give it to Me," and this means that all surplus money accumulated should be utilized in furthering the Krsna consciousness movement. that Srila Prabhupada did not imply that devotees should dump all their money in temples where money could be appropriated or stolen by the corrupt. I urge that we should not interpret it literally. I have erred in not specifically noting that this was included in the PURPORT by Srila Prabhupada, and not part of the actual verse 9:27. Elsewhere in the Gita, Lord Krishna teaches us how to handle charity: That gift which is given out of duty, at the proper time and place, to a worthy person, and without expectation of return, is considered to be charity in the mode of goodness. But charity performed with the expectation of some return, or with a desire for fruitive results, or in a grudging mood, is said to be charity in the mode of passion. And charity performed at an improper place and time and given to unworthy persons without respect and with contempt is charity in the mode of ignorance. GITA 17:20/22 PURPORT by Srila Prabhupada: In the Vedic literature, charity given to a person engaged in spiritual activities is recommended. There is no recommendation for giving charity indiscriminately. Spiritual perfection is always a consideration. Therefore charity is recommended to be given at a place of pilgrimage and at lunar or solar eclipses or at the end of the month or to a qualified brahmana or a Vaisnava (devotee) or in temples. Such charities should be given without any consideration of return. Charity to the poor is sometimes given out of compassion, but if a poor man is not worth giving charity to, then there is no spiritual advancement. In other words, indiscriminate charity is not recommended in the Vedic literature. Charity is sometimes performed for elevation to the heavenly kingdom and sometimes with great trouble and with repentance afterwards. "Why have I spent so much in this way?" Charity is also sometimes made under some obligation, at the request of a superior. These kinds of charity are said to be made in the mode of passion. There are many charitable foundations which offer their gifts to institutions where sense gratification goes on. Such charities are not recommended in the Vedic scripture. Only charity in the mode of goodness is recommended. Contributions for indulgence in intoxication and gambling are not encouraged here. That sort of contribution is in the mode of ignorance. Such charity is not beneficial; rather, sinful persons are encouraged. Similarly, if a person gives charity to a suitable person without respect and without attention, that sort of charity is also said to be in the mode of darkness. --- On Tue, 5/6/08, K.V Gopalakrishna <gopalakrishna.kv wrote:K.V Gopalakrishna <gopalakrishna.kvRe: Fwd: Doing All Activities as "Worship" of God Date: Tuesday, May 6, 2008, 8:26 AM Dear all, Pardon me for a small correction. Guest guest
Dear Mr. Gopalkrishnan,I am talking from Bangladesh. I think you are right. In Srimadvagabat Gita,Lord Sri Krishna says several times thinks like- 'sarvavuta hiterata'.(Oh arjun, yogis must be serving for welfare for panchyavutas,i.e. all creatures of mine.; He is my favorite who serve all creatures knowing my presence as jivatmas in all these creatures.) I think thus He has emphasized the necessities of serving the creatures besides the serving Him in temples only. Several acharyas have taken this concepts naming as 'Sarvute samadarshita'.In ChaitanyaCharitamrita it is said that-"Jive daya, name ruchi, vaisnab seban.eha hoite nahi ar dharma sanatan."That means, Sanatan dharma constitutes of these virtues like charity for all creatures, chanting the Holy name and serving the vaisnavas.Swami vivekananda also took this concept earnestly and dedicated his life for charity of mankind thinking as He is serving the Lord.Rishi Bankim Chandra Chatterjee(writer of 'Vande mataram') claims the superiority of Hinduism over all other religions only for this concepts of Hinduism.I think it is high time for Hindus to serve and help our poor Hindu brothers and sisters as if thinking serving the Lord. Because a lot of poor Hindus are converting to Christianity now only for some financial help from Christian missionaries rather than any spiritual help.
