Chapter 1: Observing the Armies on the Battlefield of Kurukshetra

Verse: 1

Dhrtrashtra

said: O Sanjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pandu assembled in the

place of pilgrimage at Kurukshetra, desiring to fight, what did they

do?

Explanation:Kurukshetra,

the site of the battlefield was a place of pilgrimage. Dhrtrashtra was

conscious of the fact that one with piety would benefit from the

auspicious influence of this place. The Pandavas were pious by nature

and had Sri Krishna, the personification of piety, on their side.

However, his own sons, headed by the evil Duryodhana were by nature

impious. Dhrtrashtra was therefore fearful of the outcome of his

impious sons fighting with the pious Pandavas in such a holy place.

Despite this, he was eager for the war to begin, since he wanted to

establish his supremacy on the kingdom that he had wrongfully usurped

from the Pandavas.

This is the only time in the Bhagavad-gita that Dhrtrashtra speaks, yet in this single verse he speaks volumes. The verse

reveals his envy, his impious nature and greed for material opulence.

It contains all the ingredients of the intrigue and passion that

finally culminated in the great battle of Mahabharata.
