Varalakshmi Viradham is a popular ritual observed by married women in South India and Maharashtra. Goddess Lakshmi - the goddess of wealth and prosperity - is worshipped on this day. Women fast during the day and perform the puja seeking long life and wealth for their spouse.The Varalakshmi Viradham is performed during the Tamil month of Aadi (Aug 15 - Sep 15). The Friday before Pournami(the full moon day) in this month is considered the best day perform this pooja. This year the Varalakshmi Viradham falls of 15th August.

According to another Hindu legend, the origin of Varalakshmi Vratha is associated with a game of dice played between Lord Shiva and Parvati. Goddess Parvati who was winning all the games was accused of cheating by Lord Shiva. So they decided to ....
