Krishna, Guruvayoorappa ! Dear Bhaktas , According to the scriptural injunctions of the Vedas, Rishis , Brahmanas and renunciant-Bhaktas survive on alms alone . Both , providing and acceptance of alms . are sacred rituals . The English word "Begging" does not reflect this truth . Bhagavan states in Bhagavad-Gita 17.20-22 :" After determining to perform *Danam* (Charity without expecting anything in return) , one should ensure the pure place, auspicious time and worthy Recipient ( who is unable to return the favor) . Such a *Danam* is *Sattvic*. Charity which is offered with the expectation of gaining some return or with a desire for fruitive results, or which is given in a grudging mood, is `Rajasvic' . Charity given at an impure place and an improper time to an unworthy Recipient, in a mood of contempt and disrespect, is `Tamasvic' ". Now a days, "begging" is big business. Begging Mafias, employ their Labors( handicapped , sick or aged ) near major temples to beg and collect money from public . The entire daily collection goes to the Mafia-owner. There are Goondas to control these labors and collect their daily earnings. Bare minimum daily-wage is given to the Begging-labors. The Mafia kidnap children and then cruelly amputate them to utilize for Begging purpose . Such type of Begging should not be encouraged at sacred places like Guruvayoor . These Mafias are security threats to the Temple which is on the hit list of terrorists. In Guruvayoor, Bhagavan has already ensured the well-being of all His Bhaktas . Free Anna-dana is being given daily to all those interested . Additionally, Bhaktavalsalan is ever available to protect His needy Bhaktas . He will serve the needy ones, through His Bhaktas who are instruments of His divine will . Therefore, Madhava-Seva is Manava-Seva. When one commits himself to serve Bhagavan, "Manavas" are automatically benefited by it. One year back, the Guruvayoor Devaswom Board's political members raised the popular slogan "Manava-Seva is Madhava-Seva" to divert Guruvayoor temple's funds for non-devotional schemes. When it became a controversy , Guruvayoorappan's will was sought in an * Ashtamangala Devaprasnam*. Bhagavan rejected their proposals and emphasized instead the following : *Prasada-Oottu* ( Daily free Annadana) to all interested Bhaktas. *Sharanalayam* ( free of cost Shelter) for elderly Bhaktas. *Veda-Patashala* ( Institution to teach the Vedas free of cost ) . Basically, all the Governments in power are hostile to Hindu temples which are categorized according to the income received from Devotees . Any temple having insufficient income , is bound to be closed down. As such , it is undesirable to stop offerings to the temple . From a vedic point of view too, the offerings to temple are like a Disciple's *Guru-Dakshina* to Guru . The Disciple should not think, "My Guru is already rich . So , no need for me to give him any *Guru-dakshina* . Better, I give that money as charity to the beggars outside". If one is honest in his *Sharanagati*, Bhagavan will guide his *Bhagavath-seva*, through scriptural injunctions or appropriate other mediums. Where necessary, divine instructions will come through *Intuition*, *Nimitham* (symptom) , Acharya's advice or even *Swapna-Darshanam* ( specific vision in Dream). If we look at *Parama-bhaktas* like Brahmasri Malliyoor Shankaran Namboodiri , we can see that they are adhering to the Dharma-shastras on Charity related matters . Blind-charity to God-haters or such undeserving persons do not happen. It is the suffering Bhaktas who are receiving charity from them . Om Namo Narayana !!!!Krishnadaya-------------------------------- On Thurs, 11/6/09, jayasankar vattekkat <vinodvattekkat wrote:Re: OFFERINGS TO SRI GURUVAYOORAPPAN Pranamam to all, Our Karunamayan Bhagavan is living with the poor people's heart. If we are serving those poor people, the benifit will directly go to Guruvayoorappan. We are putting Vazhipadu in Bhandaram same time we are ignoring beggers who living in Guruvayoor. Please know one thing Guruvayoorappan is testing us, he comming to us in the roopam of beggers. if we are ignoring those beggers we are ignoring Guruvayoorappan. Even the temple workers unions are affiliated to them and you will find they will go on strike on a silly matter causing lot of inconvenience to the devotees.Annadanam is a continuous affair it is going on for years. Now they are said to be giving food in the evening also. But for old people or people with infirmities there is no help from the Devaswam(authoritie s). They buy new cars for themselves and live in luxury. VIPs visiting Guruvayur temple are given great honours. Thulabharam is done in your presence and weighing you against any commodity. Usually they offer nendran pazham. But you will see the same nendran kula is used for at least 40 or 50 people on the same day. They want only money from you towards the cost of the fruit. The only favour they do to the aged and old is to make them go inside directly and worship the Lord without going through the queue. That is also for a short period in the evening say from 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm or so. If you can offer any money to some organisation who give food to the poor that would be a great offering to God. There are people who without publicity give food packets to the poor people in the govt. general Hospital in Ernakulam. A friend of mine carries 50 parcels of food (rice and sambar and curd mixed) and delivers to the poor patients in govt hospital. Sai Seva samithi gives drinking water. When expensive drugs for the treatment of cancer get exhausted the oncologist telephones, Ernakulam Karayogam and ask them to arrange for medicine. Immediately medicines are arranged and delivered free of cost. Ramakrishna Sevasramam in Kochi distributed more than 800 kits of educational aid to the poor school children. Of course Rotary club sponsored a major portion of the items. Some traders and frinds of the Sevasramam also joined in the sponsorship. They give educational scholarships also for study in the professional courses. I think participating in this kind of activity would please the Lord more than putting money in the hundi and allow the govt. to spend it for other purposes. thank,lk
