Dear all,According to Matsya Purana, there are a total of four lakhs (400,000) slokas in the eighteen Puranaas. These slokas were passed on by oral recitation in every Dwapara yuga (by Vyasa Bhgavan) here on earth. The original Puranas contain one billion verses and they exist in "amarthya lokam" meaning in the world of Devas or heavenly planets. Essential meaning is contained in these four lakhs slokas given to us. There is a slokam in Matshya Puranam describing this:chatur-laksa-pramaanena dvaapare dvaapare sadaTad ashtadasadha(18) krutva bhur-loke'smin prabhasyate(400,000 slokas are given to marthyas or humans)adyapi amartya-loke tu sata-koti-pravistaramtad artho'tra chatur-laksah samkshepena nivesitah(one billion slokas exist in Amartya loke and 4 lakhs contain the essence)The last Purana Vyasa Bhagavan gave us was Bhaagavatha Purana. He was not satisfied even after writing all 17 puranas and Mahabharatha. Narada advised Vyasa to glorify Vasudeva to get the peace and happiness he was searching for:"o best of sages, since you have broadly described the four goals of human life beginning with religious performances, you have not described the glories of Vasudeva." (bhagavata 1.5.8-9)So as the last Purana, Vyasa Bhgavan wrote Bhagavatham which is "as brillianrt as the sun and it has arisen to save us from the darkness of the age of Kali".Then Melpatthur Bhattathiri churned the Bhgavatham for 100 days and he got 99 suvarna kamalam (golden lotuses) studded with precious stones from the ocean of Bhagavatham. On the hundredth day, Bhagavan Himself in the form of Guruvayurappan came out of the ocean of Bhagavatham and Melpatthur offered His Narayaneeya Mala to Bhagavan. Thus Melpatthur proved that Bhagavatham is indeed Krishna Himself, but we have to churn it with devotion to find Him! He did the churning for us and now we have to just read Narayaneeyam to see Bhagavaan with Vanamala and Narayaneeya mala! Hantha Bhagyam Janaanaam!Since then devotees all over the world keep the Suvarna Narayaneeya Mala fresh and shining by reading Narayaneeyam with utmost devotion!SreekrishnaarpanamashtuRegards and prayersSavitris Note :Skanda puranan has the highest number of slokas - 81,100.Next is padma purana with 55,000.Narada Purana- 25,000Siva Purana and Varaha Purana- 24,000 eachVishnu Purana- 23,000Gatuda Purana- 19,000Bhagavatha Purana and Brahmavaivartha Purana-18,000 eachKurma Purana-17,000Agni Purana -15,400Bhavishya Purana- 14,500Matshya Purana- 14,000Brahmanda Purana- 12,000Linga Purana- 11,000Vamana Purana and Brahma Purana- 10,000Markandeya Purana -9,000
