Rama Nama, the taraka mantra has been explained by

various parabhaktas in various means

1. Tulsidasji (who lived in Kasi) says...

Ra is the main aksharam from Ashtakshara mantram -

Om Namo NaRAyana

Ma is the main aksharam from Panchashara mantram -

Om NaMA Shivaya

- So chanting Rama, is chanting both these mantras

together

 

2. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

Some Krishna bhakthas who do understand the power of

Rama Nama, still might want to chant Krishna Nama

instead...

For them,

Ra - Radhe

Ma - Madhava

 

So just chant Rama only or chant the mahamantra, which

contains Krishna also:-)
