Dear Vinod,

Your explanation of the Great Dance of Lord Siva,the Supreme Protector is simply

fabulous.The underlying principle of the Great Dance is nothing but what the

scientists call nuclear fission vibrations of protons and neutrons.When we see

the nature we can see the dancing waves,moving leaves of plants and trees and

even the movements of animals and human beings all are part of the Great Cosmic

Dance of Lord Siva.Without such movement the world or the universe cannot

sustain.Anyway it is a master piece and you derserve congratulations for a lucid

way inwhich you have written as also the Stotram.God Bless.

In fact there is no difference between Lord Siva and Lord Narayana.All are

same.Only our ancestors allotted creation,protection,destruction to various

deities as everything is done by the same Cosmic Creator with and without form

as it is difficult to treat the Creator formless something like air.Hence they

gave some form for concentration and when the devotee reaches super conscious

stage by raising Kundalini power he becomes one with the Cosmos where he finds

everything as ONE and there is no two.This is what vedas say and this has been

the experience of many sages of past and certain of the present.Anyway I am not

moving away in a different direction and what you have enunciated is laudable.

The Tandava or celestial dance of Lord Siva is extremely thrilling and charming,

exquisitely graceful in pose and rhythm and intensely piercing in effect. It was

none other than the mighty demon king Ravana (a great Saiva) who laid the first

attempt to put this dancing form of Siva into a chain of energetic words

reflecting Siva's glory & greatness. The dance of Lord Siva is for the welfare

of the world. The object of His dance is to free the souls from the fetters of

Chidambaram is the expert dancer. He has four hands. He wears the Ganga and the

crescent moon on His matted locks. He holds Damaru in His right hand. He shows

Abhaya Mudra to His devotees with His raised left hand. The significance is: " O

devotees! Do not be afraid. I shall protect you all. " One left hand holds the

fire. The other right hand points down on the Asura Muyalaka who is holding a

cobra. He has raised the left foot in a beautiful manner. The sound of the drum

invites the individual souls to His feet. It represents Omkara. All the Sanskrit

alphabets have come out of the play of the Damaru. Creation arises from Damaru.

The hand which shows Abhaya Mudra gives protection. Destruction proceeds from

fire. The raised foot indicates Maya or illusion. The

hand which points down shows that His feet are the sole refuge of the

individual souls. Tiruakshi represents Omkara or Pranava.

All the Tamil saints have sung hymns in praise of Nataraja. There is Akasa Linga

here which indicates that Lord Siva is formless and attributeless. The popular

saying goes: " He who dies in Varanasi with " Ramanama " on his lips and heart,

attains salvation for no reason. He who remembers Arunachalam or Tiruvannamalai

attains Mukti. He who gets Darsana of Nataraja attains final emancipation. " Real

Chidambaram is within the heart. Nataraja dances in the hearts of devotees who

have burnt egoism, lust, hatred, pride and jealousy.

Dear devotees of the Lord ......... This is a beautiful explanation of Siva's

dancing form which Lankapati Ravana sang to reach the highest point so as to

become eligible to die at the hands of Paramatma Sri Ramachandra.

Mountain Parvati (his spouse) during his love play; whose constant favourable

sight dispells even severe catastrophe - he may engage my mind happily in some

Kadamba kumkumadrava pralipta digva dhoomukhe |

Madandhasindhurasphuratva guttariya mdure

artist to paint playfully on the breast of the daughter of the Mountain - may my

Nilimpa nirjhari dharastanotu krittasindhurah

Kalanidhan bandurah shriyam jagatdhurandharah ||8||

Whose neck is bedight with the dark glaucity witnessed by the gathering of rain

laden clouds at mid-night in the moon-less night; who is wrapped iin the skin of

an elephant, he, the preserver of the entire world, resplendent with the

moon-shine, Lord, the Carrier of the Gangaa, may even enhance my riches.

 

Praphullanee pankaj prapanch kalima prabhaa -

Valambikanthakandali ruchi prabaddha kandharam |

Smarchhidam purachhidam bhava chhidam makhachhidam

He whose neck-portion is bedight with a symbol like that doe following the

glaucous glow of the bunch of the blue lotuses; he who is the destroyer of

Kamdeva, Tripur, this world, sacrifice arranged by Daksha, the elephant (to

Yam - I chant his name only.

Jayatvadabhravibhrambhrambhadubjang mashvasha

Dwinirgamatkramasphuratkaral bhal havyavat |

Dhimi ddhimi ddhimi dhwann mridang tunga mangala

Dhwani kram pravartita prachanda Tandavah Shivah || 11 ||

The fast movement of the violently hissing serpents over his head is stoking the

forehead fire dreadfully, and the profoundly auspicious sound of the drums is

making his Tandava once again in faster beats. May such God Shankar be ever

victorious!

Kada nilampa nirjhari nikunjakotare vasan

Vimuktadurmatih sada shirastha manjali vahan |

Vilola lolaochano lalambhalla lagnakah

Shiveti mantramuccharan kada sukhi bhavamyaham || 13 ||

Concentrating totally my mind on the Great-God Chandrashekhar with bright

forehead, and shunning my vile thoughts, dwelling inside a grove on the bank of

river Gangaa, when shall I be happy chanting the 'Shiv' incantation with tear

filled eyes, while keeping my bound hands upon my forehead?

 

Imam hi nitya meva mukta mottamam stvam

Pathansmaranbru vannaro vishuddhameti santatam |

Hare gurau subhaktimashu yatinanyatha gatim

Vimohanam hi dehinam Sushankarasya chintanam || 14 ||

He who reads, chants and remembers this best of the hymns, remains ever pure and

soon attains the pious devotion of Lord Shankar, the Chief of Gods. He never

faces adversity because the mere rememberance of Lord Shankar destroys all the

infatuation inherent in the beings.

 

Poojavasan samaye dash vaktra geetam

Yah Shambhu poojan param pathati pradoshe |

Tasya sthiran rath gajendra tungamukta

Lakshmeem sadaiva sumukheem prad-dati Shambhuh || 15 ||

At the conclusion of his evening worship, he who chants this hymn dedicated to

Lord Shambhu and created by Ravana, receives chariots, elephants, horses and

other riches whichever remain favourable to the persons by the grace of Lord

Shankar.

congratulations. This beautiful explanation comes from Acharya Sivananda in his

famous book - " Lord Siva and His Worship "

& presented here. That's all. I would like to recommend this unique composition

(also available in PDF) for a detailed understanding of Siva Tattwa, Saiva

Sidhhantam, Saiva Pooja padhhati, Linga mahatmyam, Saiva acharyas & top bhaktas

alongwith many stotras/pujas/festivals etc. to have an in-deep feel of true

Saivism & suplemented with a heart touching explanation to the oneness of

Whoes forehead is resplendent amidst the fast moving streams of the river Ganga,

appearing like the wave-ivys of the current in the couldron of matted locks,

whose light of the forehead is brightly lit, where head carries the nascent moon

- to such Lord Shiva may my attachment be ever unwaning.

 

Dharadharendra nandini vilas bandhu bandhur-

Spharaddiganta santati prameedman maan se |

Kripakatacksha dhorani Niruddhadurhara padi

Kwachiddigambare manovinodmetu vastuni || 3 ||

Whose heart is delighted seeing the luxuriant head ornaments of the daughter of

Mountain Parvati (his spouse) during his love play; whose constant favourable

sight dispells even severe catastrophe - he may engage my mind happily in some

such unfettered and uncovered delight.

 

Jatabhujanga pingalasphuratphanamani prabha-

Kadamba kumkumadrava pralipta digva dhoomukhe |

Madandhasindhurasphuratva guttariya mdure

Mano Vinodmadbhutam vibhartu bhootabhatari || 4 ||

The yellowish glow emanating from the germs of the serpents dwelling in whose

matted locks in making the visages the dames of the Quarters resplendent with an

enchanting radiance; who is donning the skin of a 'must' elephant which has made

him look smooth complexioned - may in such Lord of Beings my heart be ever

engaged playfully.

 

Sahastra lochana prabhritya shesh lekha shekhar

prasoondhooli dhorini vidhoosaran ghri peethabhuh |

Bhujang raj malaya Nibaddhajat jootakah:

Shriye Chiraya jayatam chakorbandhushekharah || 5 ||

He. whose sandals are covered with the pollen of the flowers on their crowns by

the gods including Indra at the the celestials bowing to the Great Lord; he

whose tendril locks are bound by the coils of the Great Serpent 'Shesh' - such

Lord Chandrashekhar (Shiv, having moon on his head) may ever enhance my

prosperity and property.

 

Lalatachatvarajwaladdhananhavyasphulinga bha-

Nipeeta panchasayakam namannilimpanayakam |

Sudhamayookha lekhaaya virajman shekharam

Mahkapali ampade shiro jatalmasto nah || 6 ||

He whose forehead fire had incinerated Kamdeva (the lord of love); who is ever

adored by Indra, who dons the moon as his diadem, may such Great Lord help us

enhancing or riches.

 

Karala bhala pattika dhagaddhagaddhagajjwala-

Dhananjaya hutikrita-prachanda panch sayake |

Dharadharendranadini kushagra chitra patraka -

Prakalpanaikashalpini trilochnane ratirmam || 7 ||

He whose dazzling forehead strip had burned Kamdeva to ashes; who is the only

artist to paint playfully on the breast of the daughter of the Mountain - may my

concentration be ever centered on such a God with three eyes.

 

Naveen meghamandali niruddhaadurdharsphur -

at kuhunisheethini tamah prabaddha kan darah

Nilimpa nirjhari dharastanotu krittasindhurah

Kalanidhan bandurah shriyam jagatdhurandharah ||8||

Whose neck is bedight with the dark glaucity witnessed by the gathering of rain

laden clouds at mid-night in the moon-less night; who is wrapped iin the skin of

an elephant, he, the preserver of the entire world, resplendent with the

moon-shine, Lord, the Carrier of the Gangaa, may even enhance my riches.

 

Praphullanee pankaj prapanch kalima prabhaa -

Valambikanthakandali ruchi prabaddha kandharam |

Smarchhidam purachhidam bhava chhidam makhachhidam

Gaja chhidandhakachidam tamant kachhidam bhaje || 9 ||

He whose neck-portion is bedight with a symbol like that doe following the

glaucous glow of the bunch of the blue lotuses; he who is the destroyer of

Kamdeva, Tripur, this world, sacrifice arranged by Daksha, the elephant (to

plant is head his son Gancsh head), the Demon Andhakasur and even the of death

Yam - I chant his name only.

 

Akharvasarvamangla kala kadambamanjari

Rasapravah madhuri vijrimbhanam dhuvratam |

Smarantakam Purantakam bhavantakam Makhantakam

Gajanta kandha kantakam tamanta kantakam bhaje || 10 ||

He who is the bee to enjoy the sap of the ever increasing dalliance of the

flower of unconceited Parvati's amorous plays; who brings end of Kamdeva,

Tripura, the world, the sacrifice ranged by Daksha, the elephant, the demon

Andhakasur and and of Yamraj; I chant his name only.

 

Jayatvadabhravibhrambhrambhadubjang mashvasha

Dwinirgamatkramasphuratkaral bhal havyavat |

Dhimi ddhimi ddhimi dhwann mridang tunga mangala

Dhwani kram pravartita prachanda Tandavah Shivah || 11 ||

The fast movement of the violently hissing serpents over his head is stoking the

forehead fire dreadfully, and the profoundly auspicious sound of the drums is

making his Tandava once again in faster beats. May such God Shankar be ever

victorious!

 

Drishadwichitra ta

Jataatavee galajjala pravah pavitasthale

Gale valambya lambitam bhujanga tunga maalikam |

Damaddamaddamadanninaadavaddamarvayam

Chakaar Chand tandavam tanotu nah Shivah Shivam || 1 ||

He who bore the gushing streams of the river Ganga through his matted locks'

jungle, and thus purified, wore the galands of the the snakes around his neck;

who danced Tandava Dance on the beat of his celestial drum, the same Lord Shiv

may ensure welfare and enhance its ambit.

the friends or foes, amidst the dry straw and the lotus-eyed young ladies,

amidst the masses and the Lord of Earth, when shall I worship Lord Shiv?

 

Kada nilampa nirjhari nikunjakotare vasan

Vimuktadurmatih sada shirastha manjali vahan |

Vilola lolaochano lalambhalla lagnakah

Shiveti mantramuccharan kada sukhi bhavamyaham || 13 ||

Concentrating totally my mind on the Great-God Chandrashekhar with bright

forehead, and shunning my vile thoughts, dwelling inside a grove on the bank of

river Gangaa, when shall I be happy chanting the 'Shiv' incantation with tear

filled eyes, while keeping my bound hands upon my forehead?

 

Imam hi nitya meva mukta mottamam stvam

Pathansmaranbru vannaro vishuddhameti santatam |

Hare gurau subhaktimashu yatinanyatha gatim

Vimohanam hi dehinam Sushankarasya chintanam || 14 ||

He who reads, chants and remembers this best of the hymns, remains ever pure and

soon attains the pious devotion of Lord Shankar, the Chief of Gods. He never

faces adversity because the mere rememberance of Lord Shankar destroys all the

infatuation inherent in the beings.

 

Poojavasan samaye dash vaktra geetam

Yah Shambhu poojan param pathati pradoshe |

Tasya sthiran rath gajendra tungamukta

Lakshmeem sadaiva sumukheem prad-dati Shambhuh || 15 ||

At the conclusion of his evening worship, he who chants this hymn dedicated to

Lord Shambhu and created by Ravana, receives chariots, elephants, horses and

other riches whichever remain favourable to the persons by the grace of Lord

Shankar.
