Payyanur is located in North Kerala after Cannanore.Payyanur Pavitra Motiram is as famous as Aranmula Mirror or Ambalapizha Palpayasam. The motiram is made of gold or silver and is worn during vedic rites, holy rituals ,pitru tarpanam etc.Formation of this Pavitra Motiram is closely related to Payyanur Subramania Swamy temple.According to legends gold pavitram was recommended to avoid inconvenience of making pavitram many times a day for various pujas and rituals.Traditional pavitram is made of dharba grass.

It is uniquely crafted in ring shaped knot and considered as a sacred ornament. It is believed that worn in the right ring finger the Pavitram will bring luck and grace to anyone who wears with devotion. The three links on the top of the ring represents the three vital nadis of human body.Ida,Pingala and Sushuma.Knot between these three can awake the Kundalini Sakty(vital energy) of the body.It is believed that the Pavitram brings the Trimoorti Chaithanyam.

The person who will wear the Pavitram and the goldsmith who crafts it has to have to impose some sort of self control.According to tradition before handing over the Pavitram to the customer, the Pavitram is taken to the Payyanur Perumal Temple for special pujas and part of the cost of the Pavitra Motiram donated to the temple as an offering.
