If possible, plz try to give a simplified translation also.

Becoz some lines are really tough to have a full feeling.

Dear Vinod,

I hv taken this from some old book which was in a dilapidated condition and I cud not get the description of the lines as nothing was mentioned.It is like many songs and poems which cant hv any detailed meaning and we hv to grasp whatever said in those lines.It is not like Gita or some other great works in which verses are given with meaning.We can say this one is like a folk song or what we hear in film songs and hence I am sorry I am of no help in the matter.If the meaning also is found certainly I would hv given.The very fact that I hv not given the meaning shuld be construed that the song must hv been coined by Iravi Varma Thampy out of his mind.There are lot of such lullabies in Tamil like THATHA ADICHARO THANGA PIRAMBALE etc which are sung by grand mothers to make the child to sleep.Hence exact meaning of such songs are difficult to decipher.However on reading the lullaby one can grasp some idea and this is only to make the child to sleep in some ragas and the meaning or

composition are irrelevant..That is all.That is what I feel. Stress is given to the rhythm and the words are coined according to the wishes of the singer and if the same is sung in some nice ragas then the purpose is served.What I feel is if the lullaby is sung in Neelambari it will be nice to hear and since music is divine the child will sleep automatically.Hence we need not go deeper in the way of the setting of such lullabies.

Here is the English translation of the Tharattu by A. H. Fox

Strangways. [strangways' visited Thiruvananthapuram during Swathi

Thirunal's reign and translated this Tharattu to add in his book " The

Music of Hindustan " published by Oxford press in 1914]

The bight crescent moon, or the charming flower of the lotus,

 

The honey in a flower, or the lusture of the full moon,

 

A pure coral gem, or the pleasant chatter of parrots,

 

A dancing peacock, or a sweet singing bird,

 

A bounding young deer or a bright shining swan,

 

A treasure from God, or the pet parrot in the hands of Isvari

 

The tender leaf of the Kalpa tree, or the fruit of my tree of fortune,

 

A golden casket to enclose the jewel of my love,

 

Nectar in my sight, or a light to dispel darkness,

 

The seed of my climbing fame, or a never-fading bright pearl,

 

The brilliance of the sun to dispel all the gloom of misery,

Dear Sunil and ors,

 

I was watching the entire episode with great interest for the last

few days on the captioned subject. While I was thinking about giving

some clues on various queries raised on the same, I saw ur circular-

mail where in u hv reproduced the English translation by Fox

Strangeways which, definitely, clarifies certain queries.

 

In this regards, I reproduce below, certain words culled out from an

article by late Dr S. Venikitasubramania Iyer (a sanskrit scholar,

musicologist who devotted his entire life for spreading the names and

contributions of Kerala VaaggEyakaras (those who compose mathu-lyrics

dhadhu-music and directing to sing according to the notations):

 

" ....There is a beautiful lullaby in Malayalam beginning as :

 

OmanathingaLkinAvO..........nilAvO!

 

In it the baby in the cradle is fancied as identical with numerous

objects that are beautiful and valuable in the world. There will

hardly be a mother in Kerala who has not delighted herself by singing

this song to soothe her child to sleep. The Western musicologist,

For Strangways, was so much attracted by its music and ideas that he

translated the entire text into English and gave its musical form in

staff notation in his " Music of Hindostan " . The author of this song

is Irayimman Thampy and the occasion of its composition was the birth

of Swati Tirunal Maharaja known as " Garbhasriman " as he was

considered to be the king even before his actual birth...... "

 

Many of his songs, based on religious subjects, kummi, thullal,

thiruvathirakkali etc. were popular during his life time and have

published many with notations during that period. Some of his songs

are available in the following publications:

 

1) Omanathinkal - Kerala Sangita Nataka Academy;

2) Abhinayasangitam - State Language Instt.
