Illam nira’ on SundaySaturday August 6 2005 12:04 IST GURUVAYUR: The annual ‘illam nira,’ a ritual announcing the plenitude of crops, will be performed at the Sree Krishna temple here on Sunday. The members from the traditional Manayam Tharavadu and Azhikkal Tharavadu will bring nearly 100 paddy sheaves between 7 a.m and 8 a.m. and place them at the east gopuram.Thereafter, there will be an ‘arimavu aniyal’ ceremony (decorating the floor with a paste made of rice), which will be followed by pooja.Nearly 40 keezhsanthis of the temple will then carry these sheaves on their heads. The long procession lead by Puthiyedathu Pisharody will circumambulate the nalambalam and enter it. After one pradakshinam inside, the sheaves will be placed at the namaskara mandapam in front of the sreekovil.Melsanti Munnoolam Hari Namboothiri will perform the special rituals and Lakshmi pooja and carry one sheaf to the sreekovil and place it at the Lord’s

feet.Temple tantris Chennas Raman Namboothiripad, Vasudevan Namboothiripad and ooralan Mallissery Parameswaran Namboothiripad will supervise the rituals. The sheaves, which were offered to the Lord, will be distributed among the devotees as prasadam.Thousands of devotees throng this temple to witness the ritual and take the paddy home in the hope that it will bring prosperity. The seeveli on Sunday will be performed at 6 a.m.
