A solar calendar is a calendar whose dates indicate the position of the earth on its revolution around the sun (or equivalently the apparent position of the sun moving on the celestial sphere). ... It has twelve months: 1. Chingam 2. Kanni 3. Thulam 4. Vrischikam 5. Dhanu 6. Makaram 7. Kumbham 8. Meenam 9. Medam 10. Edavam 11. Mithunam & 12. Karkidekam The months are named after the constellations in which the Sun is seen during the period. Thus Chingam (from Simham or Lion) is named after the constellation Leo. Chingam is the first month of the Malayalam calendar. In the Hindu religion, Dhanu, which is generally referred to as Dhanu Yatra, is a festival holiday relating to Lord Krishnas visit to Mathura. Karkidakam is the last month of the Malayalam calendar. ... The Malayalam era called KollaVarsham was established in 825 CE (Christian Era). Some historians attribute the founding of this era to King Udaya Marthanda Varma, King of Venad. In this panchanga, year will start from Chingam, the first Malayalam month (in English calendar this will be August or September). This panchangam is influenced by the Persian panchanga system. India's officially accepted pancangam is SAKAVARSHAM which is started in A.D.78 The 'Chingam' month corresponds to the Avani month of Tamil Calendar. The Karkidekam rain showers is over now & we are set to a new start welcoming the new cycle of year. This month is fully equipped with grand celebrations of Krishna Janmashtami (Ashtami Rohini) & ONAM fever. May this be an auspicious start to every one ! ------------------- Hare Krishna Hare Rama Om Namo Narayanaya:
