Haj: Union Cabinet enhances subsidised travel quota

Special Correspondent

All applicants from the State may be able to join pilgrimage; first

flight on December 10

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All the applicants for Haj this year will be able

to undertake the pilgrimage following the enhancement of quota by the

Union Government.

The Union Cabinet decided two days ago that the total number of

pilgrims permitted to subsidised travel be increased from 82,000 to

one lakh.

This year, 13,002 persons applied to join the 2006 pilgrimage from

Kerala. Out of them, 6,806 have been selected through draw of lots.

The remaining 6,196 have been placed in the waiting list. Now, those

in the waiting list will also be able to join the pilgrimage, the

Minister for Industries and Wakf, V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, said.

He said that the main embarkment point for the pilgrimage would be

the Karipur airport. Last year, the State Government had requested

that flights be operated from Kochi also. However, the Centre had not

conceded that. This year also, the State would be pressing the Centre

to allow boarding from Kochi.

The Minister said the work on the Haj House in Kozhikode, which would

provide boarding and other amenities to the pilgrims, would be

started this year. The House was proposed to be built at an estimated

cost of Rs.4.50 crores. The State Government had allocated Rs.1 crore

for the House in the Budget. This year, it was expected to allot Rs.1

crore. The Central Haj Committee had promised to provide Rs.1.50

crores. The balance would be raised as public contributions. (Of the

1.35 acres of land required for the House, 30 cents are yet to be

acquired.)

As per the present schedule, the first flight carrying the pilgrims

would leave Karipur on December 10.

The pilgrims will be required to report for emigration and security

clearance eight hours in advance.
