Some Famous Temples of Kerala Chottanikkara temple

 

Chottanikkara temple, located near Ernakulam enshrines Bhagawati - the mother

Goddess, is one of the most popular deities in Kerala.

People who have mental illness seek refuge in the divine mother, who

graciously cures all her devotees. Goddess Rajarajeswari is the presiding deity.

This deity is worshipped in three different forms - as Saraswati in the

morning - draped in white, as Bhadrakali at noon draped in crimson, and as Durga

in the evening decked in blue.

 

 

Ettumanoor Temple

 

Location - 12 Kms North Of Kottayam Town, Kerala.

 

Deity - Lord Shiva.

 

Origin - 16 th Century.

 

Main Attraction - Mural Art Centre.

The temple, a specimen of the indigenous Kerala style of architecture,

attracts many Hindu devotees from all over the state.The copper plated conical

roof of the central shrine, is in itself a majestic structure.

The shrine is inlaid with beautiful carvings of scenes from the Ramayana,

Bhagavatha and Krishna Leela. The temple is also endowed with an exquisite

collection of Mural paintings and sculptures, depicting scenes from the Hindu

mythology.

 

 

Guruvayur

 

Location - 29 Kms North-West Of Thrissur, Kerala

 

Popularly Known as - Dwaraka of the South

 

Dedicated To - Lord Krishna

 

Significance - Most Important Hindu Pilgrim Centre in Kerala

A temple, famous all over India as a pilgrim centre, dedicated to Lord Krishna

popularly known as Guruvayoorappan. The Sreekrishna idol of this temple is

believed to have been worshipped by Vasudevar and Devaki at Dwaraka. This shrine

popularly known as ‘Dakshina Dwaraka’ (Dwaraka of south)

Guruvayoor, where the famous Sree Krishna Temple is situated, is one of the

most sacred and important pilgrim centres of kerala. The walls of the sanctum

sanctorum are inlaid with exquisite mural paintings and carvings.

 

 

Kaladi

 

The temple here, situated by the river, has two shrines within. One is

dedicated to Sri Sankaracharya and the other to the goddess Saradamba, the local

deity. Next to it is a Krishna temple built by the Sankaracharya to replace an

ancient one that had been submerged.

How to get there: The nearest airport is Cochin, 45 kms away. The nearest

railhead is Angamaly, 10 kms away.

 

 

Mannarsala Temple

Situated in southern Kerala in the district of Alleppey is a temple dedicated

to Nagaraja and his consort Nagayakshi- the holy place called Mannarsala.

The temple is located two kilometres off the National Highway. It assumes the

form of a small forest in a tiny village. Legend has it that hundreds of years

ago, there was a Namboodiri family which was issueless. In order to prolong the

tradition of the family, a bride was brought into the family from somewhere in

northern Kerala. After some time, she conceived and gave birth to a baby boy and

a snake. It is supposed that this snake was installed in the sanctum of the

temple as Nagaraja.

 

 

 

 

Sri Padmanabhaswami Temple

Location - Tiruvanandapuram- Kerala

Festivals - There are two annual festivals here - one in the month of Pankuni

(Pisces-Meenam) March 15-April14, and the other in Aippasi (Tulaa-Libra)

(Oct-Nov).

Description Tiruvanandapuram (Trivandrum) gets its name from the grand

Anantapadmanabhaswamy temple, enshrining the tutelary deity - Anantapadmanabha

of the Travancore kingdom. It is one of the grandest temples of Kerala.

 

Deities - This temple enshrines an imposing image of Vishnu, in the

Anantasayanam posture; an image viewed through three doors in front of the

shrine. The original image was of wood; the current image was fashioned out of

1200 saalagramams which were specially brought down for this purpose and moulded

into shape with a special paste kadusarkara - a mixture of lime, granite,

molasses and mustard. Vishnu is viewed through three doors in a row.

 

 

 

Sabarimala

Location - Western Ghats, Kerala

 

Dedicated To - Lord Ayyappa

 

Altitude - 914 m Above Sea Level

 

Main Festival - Sabarimala Temple Festival

Sabarimala is a renowned pilgrim centre atop the rugged hills of the Western

Ghats. This holy shrine is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. The sanctum sanctoram

nestles 914 m above sea level, amidst the virgin forest wilderness of the

Western Ghats.

The Village of Sabarimala is named after Shabari who did severe penance in

order to meet Rama who granted her wish for her devotion and faith during her

penance.

The main pilgrimage is undertaken between November and January. Regardless of

caste, creed, colour, they wear black dhotis and carry on their heads, bundles

containing traditional offerings like coconut filled with ghee, camphor and

rice.

 

 

Thriprayar Temple

 

 

Location - South Of Thrissur, Kerala » Dedicated to : Lord Rama » Temple

Festival Held In : November / December » Other Attraction : Snake Boat Race

Thriprayar Temple, located south of Thrissur is one of the important temples

dedicated to Lord Rama.

The exquisite wood carvings, sculptures and Mural Paintings are an interesting

sight. The temple festival is held in November / December and includes a parade

of 17 elephants.

During the Onam festival in the months of August / September, there is a snake

boat race. There are regular buses to Thriprayar from the Shakthan Thamburan bus

stand.

 

Vadakkunathan Temple

One of the most ancient tOne of the oldest temples in the state, the

vadakkumnathan temple is a classical example of the Kerala style of architecture

and has many decorative murals and pieces of art. This is the venue of the world

famous pooram festival celebrated annually in april - may. The fireworks at the

pooram are a spectacular sight. Non hindus are not allowed entry into the

temple.

No visitor to Trichur can miss the Vadakkunnathan temple, " one of the most

unique, ancient and important " of the sacred shrines of Kerala. It stands on a

beautiful hillock at the center of Trichur overlooking the town. The vast maidan

around the temple is called Tekkinkadu or forest of teak woods and Trichur town

literally revolves round the temple.

 

 

 

Vaikom Mahadevar Temple

Vaikom is located at a distance of 33km south of Ernakulam and 40 km north of

Kottayam on the railroad between Ernakulam and Tiruvanandapuram.

 

The Deity - Shiva

Vaikom Mahadevar manifests himself as Dakshinamurthy in the panthirathi pooja

in the morning. He is worshipped as Kiraata Murthy during the Uchcha pooja at

noon and as Satchitananda in the evening.

 

The temple - The elliptical sanctum here is covered with a copper plated roof

crowned with a golden kalasam. The height of the wall of the sanctum is just

about a third of that of the roof. The building dates back to the 11th century,

and the wooden panels and the murals date back to the 15th and 18th centuries

respectively.
