My sincere thanks are due first to Lord Guruvayoorappan to have prompted Mr. Rajan Nair to write about the Glories of the Lord and Narayaneeyam in particular, as nothing takes place without the prompting of the Lord. For those in the group who are not aware of it, I like to write a few words about the new English version of the Bhaktaranjini commentary of Narayaneeyam, recently published by me through the Bhaktaranjini Trust, Bangalore. The original Bhaktaranjini commentary in Malayalam, a very scholarly commentary with hundreds of quotations from Gita, Upanishads and Puranas, was co-authored by my father, late Mahopadhyaya K.G. Vancheswwara Sastry who taught Sanskrit in Mavelikara and Trivandrum .. The book was very well received in those days, and had received letters of appreciation from the intellectual giants of that era, like Kottarathil Sankunni, Ulloor Parameswara Iyer, Tharavathu Ammalu Amma, and many many others. As the readership of the book was limited to only the Malayalam reading devotees, we, a few like-minded friends joined together and made this English version, and it was edited by another Sanskrit scholar by name Shri. S.N. Sastri. the presentation of the work is with the slokas in the Devanagari script, transliteration to English, Anvaya (Sanskrit Prose order), word-for word meaning in English, rearranging the sanskrit words and tabulated to match the syntax in English, and a very vivid English commentary. We have endured to preserve the flavour of the original Malayalam, with the quotations with meanings, and sources of the quotations, in the English version as well. The book is in 3 volumes, totalling to about 1600 pages and moderately priced at Rs. 800/- per set, without a profit motive. Any profit, if at all accrues, even without working for it, will be spent on philanthropic missions. The book has a Foreword by Poojya Swami Dayananda Saraswathi. Swamiji has himself released the book in Bangalore on 31st July 2005. The final dasaka, Kesadipaada Varnanam, embodies top-to-toe picture of little Krishna in all grace and glory . Both as a poem and as a devotional hymn, Narayaneeyam occupies a very high place in Sanskrit literature. Narayaneeyam is the master piece of Melpathur and is the most widely read of all his works.The poet depicts the image of Lord Guruvayurappan, in exemplary terms - "Sammohanam Mohanal Kantham Kanthinidhanathopi, Madhuram Madhurya Dhuryadapi, Soundaryotharathopi Sundaratharam”, The ‘Parayana' of Narayaneeyam is believed to possess the wonderful power of healing afflictions, both mental and physical, of the devotees. The "Nithyaparayana” of Narayaneeyam will enable the devotees to attain " Ayurarogyasoukhyam”. When Guruvayoor Dewaswom decided to bring out the album Narayaneeyam, names of several legendary musicians like MS, MLV were considered and finally the Dewaswom approved Leela to sing Narayaneeyam. “I got the chance to sing Guruvayarappan Narayaneeyam which I consider as an honour...”said Leela. Narayaneeya Sapthaham ( the recitation of Narayaneeyam and explaining the meaning to the public) is conducted in Guruvayur temple by Devaswom on the Narayaneeya Dinam and by others as offerings. I was heartbroken to hear this news from him . And the only thing I could do for him was to present him a copy of Narayaneeyam saying that Sri Guruvayoorappan is the top most physician in the universe ; and by chanting His sermon Narayaneeyam you will get cured. My friend took that advice seriously . He not only started chanting Narayaneeyam daily with great faith but also began to lead a life accordingly (seeing Bhagavan's hand in everything) . Thanks to the glory of Sri Guruvayoorappan and His literary incarnation 'Narayaneeyam', my friend has achieved an express recovery and is almost normal now ... And he is not worrying about anything but instead enjoying the compassion of Sri Gurvayoorappan on the basis of the mystic experiences he is getting from Bhagavan. All glories to Sri Guruvayoorappan , Narayaneeyam, Melpathur Thirumeni and Sri K.V.Gopalakrishnan. My humble request to all bhaktas and bhaktins is to spread the glory on Narayaneeyam to as many people as possible . This is the best charity you can do to the suffering world. (middle of Evening Sandhya) for the sake of world peace and well-being.. If you are in agreement, let us spread the message to all. In whatever place we are, our voices and prayers will be heard together by the Lord. I beg of you not to equate me with Guruvayoorappan and Bhattatiri, please. This frame is too small and humble. I would prefer to be at the lowest tung, a dasa of the lowest level of Bhaktas and servants of the Lord.(Dasadidasa). In all humility and devotion to the Lord. K.V. But, coming to the book, the last few copies of the first edition are being sold. Idont know when the second (revised) edition will come out. It is doubtful whether the Trust will be able to publish the second edition, as it is a big strain on me and at this age I may not be able to do it. If the Trust has to employ people to do all the services, it must have a separate office, staff etc.,which will all add up to the cost. Further I want to spend more time in spiritual matters, reading in detail, the Vishnu Sahasranama Bhashyam, the Upanishads, etc. Further, my health is also dwindling due to age. So it may become inevitable to give the publication to a regular book publisher. The unfortunate part of it is that the publisher will enhance the price to three times the cost. Any good suggestions? I would like to make a small suggestion , ie to make this book available as a E-book at the Narayaneeyam web page. You would have to check the modalities of getting paid on-line or despatching the document in pdf format via email or CD disk when the payment is received at your end. I know these are suggestion the publishers would not like to entertain, but under the current circumstances this I presume is the best alternative. But publication in book form is also necessary as most of our people, especially those in the 60-80 age range in our country do not have on-line facilities. I tried to record the parayanam, but it was a big din without clarity as we had quite a number of people chanting together. I am thinking of other ways of recording with single voice. Anyway, shall get in touch with you. I am so sorry that I cannot offer any concrete suggestion to Bhaktharanjini Trust and its publication. I could have offered my help if I were in Bangalore but I am not. I would like to know if the trust is owned by you alone or any one else as trustees? Is there any means that it can be registered as a Non Profitable Trust with additional members so that those in Bangalore from our group could take the lead and continue the uninterrupted publications of 2nd and 3rd editions in the days ahead? I am sorry to learn that your Parayanam of Narayaneeyam was not clear and I hope you would be able to do that in the near future. I pray Lord Guruvayoorappan for HIS blessings for you to accomplish that. However, I totally agree with Pravin's suggestion to computerize it and make it easy for people to download/buy online. So, in a ideal scenario we need to have both print form and online form. Like the music industry in US, they allow you to buy and download songs online or you can buy a CD, if you like that way. We as group will be glad to help you in whatever way possible to accomplish the publication. If you like to pursue this option, give us an estimate of the money required to publish Narayaneeyam. We can try to contribute as a group and bear part or full of the cost. Please let me know all your thoughts. So far as money is concerned, Guruvayoorappan had already shown the way and there is no problem. We are considering about the on-line or CD presentation of the whole book. Once we come to know about the project cost, I am very much confident that we can raise money for this social cause.
